Cyber Defense Preparedness

I have seen a lot of discussions on cyber defense preparedness, which is a natural concern, in other threads and created this thread for that discussion, so we don't end up getting off-topic on other threads, which is tough sometimes.

Really, the best thing that you can do for cyber defense is to try to do the following. For a desktop computer, back-up all of your important files to either a CDR or DVR form or use a usb stick. Back up your banking information, any correspondence that you consider important, etc. Make sure you have plenty of cash, groceries, fuel, etc. Once you finish using your computer stuff, shut it down. Disconnect your internet connection from the computer, or if you use a wireless type connection, disconnect your router from your incoming internet.

T. Charley - great advice for everyone.

Our DEFCON has always been based on nuclear threats, but there are a lot of other non-nuclear threats to USA and West, such as cyber threats to infrastructure. My greater concern is for the vulnerability of the larger USA cyber infrastructure: communications, banking, Internet, stock market, fuel centers, government, medical. WWII fighting did not have USA/NATO/West with such global cyber infrastructure connectivity that could be exploited by belligerents, during war time. Saboteurs largely had to be in-person threats that could be watched for, idenitified, and hopefully stopped. The global cyber infrastructure makes potential saboteurs much more invisible, not in person, and much more of a global threat.

The disaster in 2020 of SolarWinds being hacked and widespread hacking of USA Government sites demonstrates the magnitude of that threat. There is no doubt: that was a direct warning from Russia to USA.

My concern is that after Russia captures Kyiv and defeats the Ukraine government, if USA sanctions remain, if there will be elements in the Russia government that plan to act in response to what they call USA's "economic war" by cyber insfrastructure attacks.

I would way say, unlike concerns by others, that the USA electrical grid may not be as big of a threat, due to cyber attack alone, because of the air gap between the front office networked facilities and the separate industrial control systems (ICS) that are used in each power plant for overall control. I believe this division is a strength (possibly not intentional) of USA infrastructure cyber defense, but there is a lot of other massive vulnerability.

Well I just use a cybersecurity program that uses a whitelist and also protects from file less attacks but I mean TCharley300's method is also quite foolproof. Although he does realize data recovery exists so you could use hard disk drives instead of CD-R or DV-R, but perhaps you still may want to use the disks for vital information; you know in case the cyber attack is simply the first wave of attacks because data recovery cannot be done on hard disk drives by just anyone given how delicate the read and write head(s) are.

Cyber Command goes on offence (y)
Whose? Because the according to the PRC, the attack on the Chinese computers from USA IP addresses also include attack on Ukraine as well. If it is the USA, UK, or Western cyber offensive, then they better be prepared for the consequences in their countries. The idea that there will cyberwar by only one nation, without response from others, is not a credible long-term plan. And for certain, those nations are definitely not prepared for cyberwar. Not by any means at all, unfortunately.

The Chinese have always been so truthful.

That said, clandestine cyberattacks certainly can originate from various points to confuse as to who they are actually coming from.

To be honest ..it's kinda hard to mask an attk from one country. You have to infect an ISP be it tier 123..and they have to be in the country you want to frame. Once you do that you kinda need to send commands to infected computers from a spoofed server/up and we'll..have the.computers in the framed country attack. That's why it's just best to infect and attack all-out as it comes from many ips... Though wouldn't the host country typically have the most infected PCs?

I know you can have direct PCs attack based off location in world .if you program well. I guess they just wouldn't send much data from host country, it'd come from framed

Absolutely agree. No one suggests that the CCP regime would be truthful. I would also expect them to lie.
We also have to guard against knee-jerk reactions until we get facts.
Just because I expect the CCP (and Russia of course) to lie is not the same as "they are lying all the time."
There is a lot of advocacy out there for cyberattacks by those who continue to live in a fantasy world that we are invulnerable.

The reason I didn't mention using an extra HD is because if it is changed to a different computer, at least with the old XP--the windows has to be re-activated. IT's something in the ESN of the motherboards. (electronic serial number) I don't know about windows 10 or 11 in that respect.

(You aren't forced to activate windows, you'll just have a few popups, and you won't be able to set a background)

William that is in the story you provided the link to. I had also read it.
I think that cyber command is disrupting the GPS and targeting systems of the russians in Ukraine. That is why you hear reports of units getting lost and missile and artillery strikes that are not very accurate. IMO

Wouldn't it be space force? Since they control what's in space?
