We should not be punishing Russians

It's the only way. The Russian people must stand up finally. We need to make the Russian people stop Putin. The Russian people need to know there is a war going on. Russian people need fight for their civic duty to their country and take it back from a mad tyrant.

Only way this is possible is through extensive sanctions so that Putin cannot hide the war from his people. Don't fall for such propaganda. Putin is using his people to take the front of his war of choice. The Russian people need to be made very well aware of Putins war of choice and cutting them off from the world is a very good way to do that.

Would that be like saying the only way to stop Japan in WW2 was to drop nukes on them even though it killed a lot of innocent people?

Dropping nukes on japan to end WWII was the best choice. It saved a lot of OUR soldiers lives. War is ugly boohoo. We decided to blow up two cities instead of sending literally hundreds of thousands of OUR troops to their death on a Island with a enemy civilian or otherwise ready to die fighting to the death every single one.

But putting sanctions on Russia hurts and affects innocent people. So, we need to that in order to get them to be aware of what Putin is doing? It just sounds so messed up. Of course, the entire situation is completely messed up.

Ya, sadly it's a really messed up situation and like you're pointing out, sometimes innocent people have to suffer to get results.
