The head of the IAEA Grossi visited the Zaporizhzhia hydroelectric power station and met with President Zelensky

Bombs/weapons have been placed in the turbine hall of the nuclear plant in Zaporizhzhia:
They placed assorted weapons in the turbine hall. Along with explosives.
If the turbine hall blew up there are backup cooling systems which could take over.
Also, from the gist of what they're saying it sounds more like they're just storing the stuff there, not planting explosives with the intention of blowing up the place.

I am curious as to how this site would treat a scenario where Russia blows up a nuclear reactor in the event of a retreat. This is a very real threat and probably more likely than Putin dropping a bomb. I personally would treat it the same way as any WMD. NATO would have to get involved at that point.
Russia won’t blow up any NPP for three main reasons:
1) the “fallout” would invest mainly Crimea and the western territories of Russia itself in particular their beloved Dombass.
2) NPPs don’t explode…the Chernobyl scenario which routinely comes up is ridiculous, against physics and far from the modern reality.
3) Russia wants to link the Ukrainians NPPs to their own electrical grid.

And no…NATO besides the announcements of some politicians would not intervene since it would not configure as an attack to his soil.
Not even Chernobyl, with an open reactor directly killed anyone outside of Ukraine 40 years after.
Indirect consequences cannot be considered otherwise NATO should bomb India and China considering the amount of damage their doing to our ecosystems, damage that we’re all already paying.
There would never be any consensus to do so from countries apart from Poland and the eastern Baltic republics.
IAEA is presiding/regularly visiting every Ukrainian NPP.

I really wanna see the UK joining the war because of some sort of nuclear incident in Ukraine.
Jeopardizing London for Kiev? Not going to happen.
Unless Putin bombs Warsaw.

This is why I don't foresee it happening. Also posted the prevailing winds for Ukraine in spring and clearly shows it would spray mostly over Russia or Crimea/black sea.
Yeah but also makes no sense at all. It would definitely disrupt the already weakened links with China and India.
China is starting to get really pissed by the war.
Remember that China’s only focus for the next 10/15 years is to increase their economical and political influence worldwide.
Then comes the Taiwan question…2035/2040

Hydrogen & oxygen gas can build up inside a reactor if safety systems fail (although I doubt that). Hydrogen explosions occurred at Fukushima.

Also, if you line a reactor with C4, and fill the containment building with C4, or fire a bunker buster through the containment building, it'll blow.
If the Russians want the NPP to blow up, they can do that. However, with regards to a modern power plant blowing up, it's very unlikely for hydrogen explosions to occur. There are lots of safety measures put in place to prevent this.

The worst thing that could happen (accidentally) is a reactor meltdown, which would be kept within the containment building, so the only people affected would be the poor engineers in the containment building.

With regards to nuclear explosions, you are 100% right, that just can't happen.

Yep, a lot of progress was made in terms of safety after Chernobyl - even in the former USSR. Modern Ukrainian NPPs are generally regarded as relatively safe. Course, no reactor in the world is immune to being deliberately blown up, but even then a shutdown VVER makes for a lousy dirty bomb, and the contamination would not be catastrophic (except in the immediate vicinity of the plant).

Yeah this story comes out every while.
Like if there’s been no fight over this NPP over the past 16 months.
Lots of media hype and political opportunities to make pressure and keep people interested (scared).

@Friendly Engineer
It’s very very hard to blow up a pressure vessel from the outside.
Not saying that it’s impossible…just that the effort to put into it it’s ridiculously high compared with the benefits.
Good luck…it’s a 6 inches thick steel case.

Hydrogen explosions cannot happen in shutted down reactors since there’s no thermal reaction that could lead to the formation of it.

I doubt that Zelensky would risk a nuclear disaster on his own soil.
Still…there would be no disaster. What could happen worse could be a leak in the surroundings.

If anything will ever happen it will be a major blame game like with NS2.
NATO would never intervene not even if Russia installs a rocket in the reactor to launch it to Kiev.
Even lower possibility when the guild for this kind of action is gonna be impossible to be found.

Plus among all the crap we can read. Remember one important thing.

There’s IAEA inside that NPP.
That apart from the continuous “don’t fight around ZPR NPP”…well would be singing a different song in case.
Those are scientists not media reporters paid by article or views, or politicians in electoral campaign.
