I have to admit, I'm pretty flummoxed by how utterly incompetent the Russian military has been in their war with Ukraine.

I mean, Russia has been training to engage with Western forces since the 1940's. And they can't take Ukraine?!

The US has roll-stomped every enemy they have committed to. (Some wars they did not commit to. I am not counting those.)

I just don't understand how Russia is performing so badly.

Makes me think the Wolverines in Red Dawn should have had better success against the occupiers! lol

To be honest it comes down to 3 things.
  1. Corruption which also leads to very piss poor preventive maintenance or simply supplies/weapons just "disappear".
  2. Western Weapons are and always have been more accurate and superior so it is making a big difference too.
  3. Their logistical supply chain for war is just ludicrous and does not work in a modern war. Also not only their logistical support is a nightmare BUT highly vulnerable to sabotage and attacks.

Those three things have imo what has caused Russias epic and completely embarrassing failure in Ukraine and abroad as well.

I think these points were also part of the theory in the movie World War III by Robert Stone.
 
I have heard but cannot verify that Russian the defense minister has pocketed up to a third of Russias defense budget while he’s been in that position.
There is also an organizational problem with Russias military. What is expected of noncoms in the US military is on the shoulders of junior officers. They have no real professional noncom core. And from what I hear from most vets it’s the noncoms that are the backbone and get things done in the big green machine.

There's loads of quotes throughout history by military geniuses about the sheer importance of logistics. Wars are won and lost by logistics, and Russia has piss-poor logistics.

Ukraine, on the other hand, has rather good logistics, co-ordinated by their NATO allies. I saw a BBC news video once on how Ukraine manages Western supplies getting to where they need to be. They have rooms underground with teams of staff on telephones and computers working hand in hand with their NATO counterparts organising deliveries & transport.
 
I don't think Russia's defence in depth strategy will work well against the counteroffensive simply because of poor logistics. Unless the Russians get their collective asses into gear when it comes to logistics they've got very little hope.

Adding a fourth to this too, communication folks. We have see on multiple times Russian comms be hacked or just play listened in on because the Ukrainians were able to get their hands on an encrypted sat phone. The Russians lack an ability to communicate effectively on the battlefield, allowing one of our strong suits to be aided to the Ukrainians. Our intel given alone has been extremely influential in this war IMO. If you know the enemy’s next move, it’s game over.

I think part of Russia's strategy (if you could call that) might have depended on the west staying out of the conflict completely. So bad assumptions or bad intel?
If the west had not contributed weaponry and logistical expertise, would Russia be fairing better? Ukraine may be doing the fighting largely alone, but to say they are in it alone is not a complete assessment.

As much as I despise this war and Russia, if the west decided to stay out of it, as well as other European countries, I believe Russia would have succeeded taking Kyiv at some point. I know for sure an argument can be made for the Ukrainian side, Im just basing this off statistical numbers and sheer volume of military assets.

I completely agee. I don't deny that I had sympathy for Russia, above all for some political ideas in which I am more congenial. I our Occidental societies there are some distortions about religion, family, even about what a men and a woman are. I don't like at all some thing like the "climate change" that I think they are intended to change the habists by means of an invented emergency. Just to make a simple example. As to say, I thought Russia a Country that could have changed some things, like it did USSR in past: it is not a secret that most of the rights obteined in the West during the cold war, were due to the fear that some Countries went with the Communists. I thought that Russia could have bring a kind of wind of change. But I tried even to analyze the situation in a way based on the facts and I have to admit that the Russia "performance" is actually completely ludicrous: it is a fact. It made an own goal with an empty goal post. Worse than that only Gorbachiof was succesuful to do. For now...
 
Continuing this after seeing the recent possible death of another Russian colonel INSIDE Belgorod mind you. I wonder what the “red line” would be for Russia. Might have to start a new thread asking the forums opinion on that. How far can Ukraine go and Russia sustain losses until they get fed up and begin to use other means of warfare?

If these insurgent attacks are making us scratch our heads. You can only imagine what it is doing inside the ranks of Russian soldiers. Throw on top of that what the Wagner’s actions are having.

I’m going to venture there could be a major reversal or power shift inside Russia soon.
I’m not saying Russia won’t escalate. But it is just as much a sign of normalcy bias to assume that Russia is going to escalate in some form.
