⚡HIGHLIGHTS FROM ARTICLE:
  • Ali Khamenei has directed Iran's Supreme National Security Council to prepare and attack Israel in response to the attack this weekend.

  • He made the decision after receiving a detailed briefing of the extent of the damage caused by the Israeli attack on the missile production sites and air defense systems. Khamenei reportedly said that the scale of the Israeli attack and the number of casualties are too great to ignore, and the lack of response will be interpreted as an admission of defeat.

  • Senior Iranian military officials have already prepared a list of dozens of military targets to attack in Israel, but the attack will most likely take place after the elections in the US, as Iran fears that such an attack before Tuesday may improve Trump's chances at winning.

US asked Lebanon to declare unilateral ceasefire with Israel, two sources say:
A US envoy this week asked Lebanon to declare a unilateral ceasefire with Israel as part of an effort to help negotiations to reach a resolution for the more than year-long conflict, a senior Lebanese political source and a senior diplomat said.
The sources said the effort was communicated by US Lebanon Envoy Amos Hochstein to Lebanese caretaker Prime Minister Najib Mikati. But such an announcement was seen as a non-starter in Lebanon, the sources said, where it would likely be equated with a surrender.

During the night, sites for the production of weapons, central headquarters and command and control complexes of the terrorist organization Hezbollah were attacked in Beirut and Nabatia

Fighter jets of the Air Force attacked during the night, under the precise intelligence guidance of the Intelligence Division, sites for the production of weapons, central headquarters and other military infrastructures of the terrorist organization Hezbollah in the Beirut area.

Air Force fighter jets, under the direction of the Northern Command, attacked command and control complexes, intelligence infrastructures and headquarters used by Hezbollah's "Southern Front" headquarters throughout Nabatia in southern Lebanon during the night.

All of the targets are located in the heart of the civilian population, this is another example of the cynical exploitation of the terrorist organization Hizbullah against Lebanese citizens, who are used as human shields in the city centers.

Before the attack, many steps were taken to reduce the chance of harming civilians, including advance warnings to the population in the area.

This attack is another part of the ongoing effort to damage the infrastructure of the terrorist organization Hezbollah in the Beirut area.

Iran preparing major retaliatory strike from Iraq within days, Israeli intel suggests:
Israeli intelligence suggests Iran is preparing to attack Israel from Iraqi territory in the coming days, possibly before the U.S. presidential election, two Israeli sources tell Axios.
Why it matters: Israel and Iran have been engaged in an escalating tit-for-tat for weeks. Carrying the attack out through pro-Iranian militias in Iraq and not directly from Iranian territory could be an attempt by Iran to avoid another Israeli attack against strategic targets in Iran.
Driving the news: The sources said Israeli intelligence suggests the attack is expected to be carried out from Iraq using a large number of drones and ballistic missiles. Iran could quickly put its preparations into action if Tehran decides to strike soon, but the U.S. doesn't know if that decision has been made, a U.S. official told Axios. What they're saying: Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps commander Hossein Salami said on Thursday that Israel made a mistake when it attacked Iran last week and stressed that Iran's response will be "different from any scenario" Israel might expect.
A high-ranking Iranian source told CNN that Iran is planning a "definitive and painful" response that will likely come before the election, the network reported Wednesday. Mohammad Mohammadi Golpayegani, chief of staff to Iran's supreme leader, told TV network al-Mayadeen on Thursday Iranian retaliation was "certain." He said the Iranian response will be "strong" and will "make our enemy regret" its attack.

Statement From Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder on Middle East Force Posture Updates

Pentagon Press Secretary Maj. Gen. Pat Ryder provided the following statement:

In keeping with our commitments to the protection of U.S. citizens and forces in the Middle East, the defense of Israel, and de-escalation through deterrence and diplomacy, the Secretary of Defense ordered the deployment of additional ballistic missile defense destroyers, fighter squadron and tanker aircraft, and several U.S. Air Force B-52 long-range strike bombers to the region. These forces will begin to arrive in coming months as the USS ABRAHAM LINCOLN Carrier Strike Group prepares to depart.

These deployments build on the recent decision to deploy the Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense system to Israel as well as DoD's sustained Amphibious Ready Group Marine Expeditionary Unit (ARG/MEU) posture in the Eastern Mediterranean. These movements demonstrate the flexible nature of U.S. global defense posture and U.S. capability to deploy world-wide on short notice to meet evolving national security threats.

Secretary Austin continues to make clear that should Iran, its partners, or its proxies use this moment to target American personnel or interests in the region, the United States will take every measure necessary to defend our people.
