A critical undersea Internet cable connecting Finland and Germany was severed on the morning of November 18.

The cable, known as Lion1, spans nearly 1,200 kilometers under the Baltic Sea, according to Ziare.

Cinia, the Finnish state telecom operator responsible for the cable, confirmed the damage but stated the cause remains unknown. An investigation is already underway.

The Lion1 cable, operational since 2016, is the first direct Internet and data link between Finland and Central Europe.
The disruption comes amid heightened tensions with Russia, which has repeatedly threatened NATO infrastructure with potential sabotage.

Last week, Finnish academic and Russia expert Pekka Kallioniemi warned that this specific cable could become a target.

Kallioniemi stated that the Kremlin appears to be preparing for large-scale sabotage of undersea Internet cables.

He cited Russian drills to disconnect their national Internet from the global network as a sign of escalating preparations.
The timing of the incident adds to growing fears about the vulnerability of vital infrastructure.

Finland, the NATO member with the longest border with Russia, has been on high alert following recent geopolitical developments. The severing of Lion1 underscores the risks facing critical networks in the region.
The Baltic Sea, which houses numerous undersea cables, is a strategic point of concern as tensions between Russia and NATO escalate.

Germany & Finland are “deeply concerned” about a severed undersea communications cable between the 2 countries, saying that it raised suspicions of possible Russian sabotage. Cinia, the Finnish state operator of the 1,200km C-Lion1 fibre optic cable between Helsinki in Finland & Rostock in Germany, said it had been cut early on Mon morning in the Baltic Sea close to Sweden. . ft.com/content/a160dc… via @ft

Russian Spy Ship "Yantar" is currently acting suspiciously around our Internet cables in the Irish Sea.

I have overlaid the cable map with her current position and I will monitor closely.

Undersea cable between Lithuania and Sweden damaged – Telia
Following Finnish media reports that an unexplained failure of an undersea telecommunications cable has disrupted communication services between Finland and Germany, Telia’s Chief Technology Officer Andrius Šemeškevičius says that the communications cable between Lithuania and Sweden was also damaged.
“The cable was cut on Sunday morning, at around 10:00. The systems immediately reported that we had lost the connection. Further investigation and clarification took place, and it turned out that it was damaged,” Šemeškevičius told the LRT TV Important Hour programme.
According to him, Telia transmits the internet connection to Lithuania through three cables, which means that the internet bandwidth was reduced by one-third due to the incident. However, the connection was restored to users by bypassing the fault.
Meanwhile, data transmission between Finland and Germany was completely interrupted. The nearly 1,200-kilometre-long cable is the only direct link of its kind between Finland and Central Europe and runs alongside other important pieces of infrastructure, including gas pipelines and electricity cables.
The failure of the only link between Finland and Central Europe comes weeks after the United States warned that it had detected increased Russian military activity around key undersea cables.

German Foreign Ministry:
We are deeply concerned about the severed cable in the Baltic Sea, raising suspicions of intentional damage. An investigation is underway. Our shared security relies on protecting critical infrastructure.
We are deeply concerned followed by seriously concerned then critically concerned then finally the US did it repeat….
