Chinese President Xi Jinping has said that no one can change the fact that Taiwan is "part of China", adding that Beijing will not give up the use of military force as an option to ensure "reunification".

In his speech, Xi stressed that achieving national rejuvenation and cross-Straits reunification is the trend of history, which can never be blocked by anyone or any force. "China must be and will be reunified."

"We make no promise to renounce the use of force and reserve the option of taking all necessary means."

This does not target compatriots in Taiwan, but the interference of external forces and the very small number of "Taiwan independence" separatists and their activities, Xi noted.

"Taiwan independence" goes against the trend of history and will lead to a dead end, Xi said.

During an impromptu press conference called hours after Xi Jinping's “unification” talk, Taiwan President Tsai Ing-wen (蔡英文) sternly rejected the possibility of a “one country, two system” framework for Taiwan as proposed by the Chinese leader earlier Wednesday.

“Taiwan will never accept a ‘one country, two systems’ framework,” said President Tsai. The majority of Taiwan’s public opinion resolutely opposes the “one country, two systems,” she added. “This is the Taiwan consensus.”

In his talk to commemorate the “Message to Compatriots in Taiwan,” which was delivered four decades ago following a raft of reforms introduced by former China’s leader Deng Xiaoping, Chairman Xi said China will strive to achieve peaceful “reunification” with Taiwan but will not renounce the use of force to resolve cross-strait disputes.

“We make no promise to renounce the use of force and reserve the option of taking all necessary means,” said Xi, emphasizing that military action could be used to prevent foreign interference and to target independence forces and activities in Taiwan.

Despite Chinese President Xi Jinping's demand that Taiwan adhere to the mythical "1992 consensus" during a speech given on Wednesday, over 80 percent of Taiwanese do not accept Beijing's definition of the fictional accord.However, a telephone survey carried out by the Cross-Strait Policy Association from Dec. 27-28 found that 84.1 percent of Taiwanese respondents could not accept the "1992 consensus" under the Chinese Communist Party's "one China principle." According to the poll, 81.2 percent could not accept the "1992 consensus" if it promoted economic development at the cost of Taiwan's sovereignty and turns it into a local government under China's control.

The survey found that 45.1 percent do not believe that the consensus is real, while 32.6 percent thought it existed. Over 50 percent of respondents were not actually clear about the consensus itself, while 40.2 percent claimed to clearly understand it.
