California Alcatraz Prison to Reopen (Seriously...)

It's home to a lot of native birds. The environmental lobby may throw up some lawsuits to protect the native Alcatraz Island jailbird or something. Also, in the 70s (I think?), a group of native American protesters occupied the island. I imagine some will initiate lawsuits to protect the cultural value of that protest. Lastly, the prison was built in a different era for different corrections standards and safety. I bet there will be lawsuits from prison and Justice reform groups also blocking this. I feel as though our federal corrections money is better spent elsewhere...

Guawd!! Why can't we preserve our history. Why is that so hard for the government. Not just Trump. It's a very common and disgusting thing that happens all to often mostly by city or state governments. I guess photos are good enough to remember important parts of history for our children. Crying out loud. This is somthing that really grinds my gears.

@DEFCON Warning System was ranting at the government mostly city and state for destroying so much of our rich past for selfish interests or money. Deplorable to say the least. Not at all directed at you.

I would never want us to be like Europe but if there is one thing to take from our European brothers across the pound is that they preserve their history and well, old downtown, and other relevant historical sites are taken care of with great care. If America put 10% of the effort in Europe does in that regard, I'd be happy. But... nope, money or selfish vanity projects are more important then preserving history for our children. Oh America...

I think the argument is that it might be cheaper to tear down and rebuild vs bringing the current facilities up to code and safety standards. And in all honesty, I'm not sure we need stronger prisons to keep Americans safe (it's not like there is a sudden surge in prison escapes from weak facilities). I think reopening Alcatraz is a solution in search of a problem.

Honestly, I feel that all historical sites, at the local and federal level, should be preserved. It wasn't until I took the kids to visit Alcatraz that I learned about the Native American occupation on the island. It was really cool seeing all of the graffiti as we pulled up at the ferry landing. It would be a real shame if our future generations were denied the opportunity to learn about this and experience it for themselves.
