China & The Philippines

The Philippines government is beefing up its military presence in the South China Sea in response to what Manila says is increasing Chinese aggression.

In recent weeks, Manila said it has witnessed greater belligerence by Chinese vessels in its near 322-kilometre Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ), despite four years of an attempted rapprochement with historic rival China.

The Philippines government has set up a South China Sea task force, which has confirmed that more ships and an aircraft will be deployed to protect the country's maritime territory and resources.

"We are exhausting all means possible to protect our territory and EEZ," the task force said.

The Philippine government expressed concern after spotting 220 Chinese vessels it believed to be “manned by Chinese maritime militia personnel” at a reef in the West Philippine Sea.

The vessels were spotted in line formation at the Julian Felipe (Whitsun) Reef on March 7, 2021, the Philippine Coast Guard said in a report to the National Task Force West Philippine Sea (NTF-WPS).

The Chines Maritime Militia,
Steel hulled boats that look like fishing boats.
The Chinese seem ok in either fielding civilian fishermen to dominate territory. Kinda like Hamas using teenagers and children into dangerous situations.
Or camouflaging military vessels into conflict to provoke international incident.
In another age we would call these acts and tactics of warfare.
Wonder when ROE change and other nations respond proportionately.

This is all the fault of the Philippines president. He dosent want to be friends with the US government, "Cant really blame him much on that one" Yet we are the only ones that can stand up to China and sink their little fishing boats with machine guns hidden under tarps on their front decks. One day he is buddy buddy with China and the next day he is threatening to sink their boats. He needs to stop drinking and pick either a Communist take over or join with the US and NATO should he want the best protection on the face of the earth.

The Philippines has continued to protest China’s incursions in the West Philippine Sea, this time over the “incessant deployment, prolonged presence, and illegal activities”of Chinese maritime and fishing vessels in the vicinity of the Pag-asa Island.

The Department of Foreign Affairs lodged a diplomatic protest yesterday against the incessant deployment, prolonged presence, and illegal activities of Chinese maritime assets and fishing vessels in the vicinity of the Pag-asa islands, demanding that China withdraw these vessels,” the DFA said in a statement Saturday.

In other words, the Philippines did nothing.
Given the position in the forum I thought they had finally started sinking those illegal fishing boats like Argentina did. The world should have taken that playbook and ran with it.

The Chinese ran crying and didn't do jack about it. Probably because they knew Brazil and the rest would have united against them but that's what you do to a bully, You break his nose and his will to fight.

I have to agree with you on this one.
China’s Navy is completely untested.
I still have serious doubts they can launch an attack in a coordinated battle situation.
They’ve built whole cities with rotten cement and only survive with millions of workers in sweat shop labor. They spew more pollution than most of the industrialized nations combined.
Until someone punches them in the nose like India did in the Himalayas their navy and “fishing fleets” will not stop and they will continue to bully who ever they can.
I’m so done with China

Just swack a few of these fishing boats when they enter territorial waters of a foreign nation and poof problem solved.

But until Washington gives the go ahead nothing will change.

Particularly given the Chinese desire to deny that these fishing boats are in any way connected to state policy. Seems like a good opportunity to field your own maritime militia and make a similar denial.

The U.S. had been taking advantage of the Philippines since 1946, as seen in the Bell Trade Act, support for the dictator Marcos in exchange for retaining the bases, and support for Aquino for the same reason. It also promoted structural adjustment policies, which means economic policies which led to de-industrialization from 1986 to the present.

Control of the West Philippine Sea started in 1988, when China went to war over Vietnam over part of it, and China won and took over. The U.S. did nothing about it. When China engaged in incursions in the Kalayaan Reef area in 1995 and 1996, the Philippines complained, and the U.S. did nothing again.

In 2012, a standoff ensued between China and the Philippines, and the Philippines backed off based on advice from the U.S. which stated that it had brokered a deal with China. It turned out that there was no deal, and China took control of the reef. The weird thing is that the order to withdraw was made by one Philippine official with no knowledge from the Philippine President, Aquino. After that, the country decided to sue, once more based on advice from the U.S. which turned out not to have been made.

The result of arbitration is that no claims to the WPS are valid as no maritime boundaries or land territories are involved, which means claimants have to negotiate with each other. It also turned out that China's claim to the West Philippine Sea was based on a claim made by Taiwan decades earlier, which explains why not just China but Taiwan rejected the arbitration result. To add to what was already an ironic situation, Taiwan is supposed to be an "ally" of the U.S. because it's a heavy arms buyer, but the U.S. dies not even recognize Taiwan as a sovereign state, and that none of them could act decisively because China is a major trading partner of not only Taiwan but even of the U.S. and the Philippines.

And to add to that, it turns out that there's not one but five claimants to parts of the West Philippine Sea: China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Malaysia, and Brunei. And the one with the most installations in the area is Vietnam.

The U.S. is the only one that can stand up to China but has never done so for more than thirty years because China is a major trading partner. During the same time, the U.S. not only failed to help its ally the Philippines but even abused it. Meanwhile, it provided arms to Taiwan, which it does not even recognize as a sovereign state. And it turns out that all of those ASEAN members which are supposed to be friends of the Philippines are claiming parts of the West Philippine Sea.

These are the reasons why Duterte got angry at the U.S. (specifically, Obama) and has been negotiating with China. What's even more ironic is that before he did so the previous President, Aquino, sent a non-diplomat who did not even speak Mandarin, Sen. Trillanes, to engage in over 15 backdoor negotiations with China while Aquino's foreign secretary criticized Trillanes for making matters worse. In short, Philippine politicians who that time were kowtowing to Obama were fighting with each other and operating based on confusing non-advice from the U.S.

And what happened after that? China remains in control of parts of the WPS together with Malaysia and Vietnam, and companies from NATO members started engaging in arms deals with Duterte, together with Russia and even India.

And now even Biden wants to meet with Duterte:

No wonder Duterte has some of the highest approval ratings not only among Philippine Presidents but even compared to other national leaders.

Apparently, the NY Times, of all papers, got it right around five years ago:

And it has now reached a point that Duterte's daughter, Sara, and the former dictator Marcos' son, Ferdinand, have now become the top Presidential and VP bets for the next elections.

The F-22 Raptor Just Landed Right In China’s Backyard

The event marked the first time the fifth-generation air-superiority fighter has been deployed to the Southeast Asian nation.

“For the first time in history, two F-22 ‘Raptor’ stealth fighter jets from @PACAF (Pacific Air Forces) landed at Clark Air Base to reinforce commitment to the Mutual Defense Treaty,” the U.S. Embassy in the Philippines (@USEmbassyPH) announced via Twitter, further noting that U.S. and Filipino pilots discussed training, aircraft capabilities, and future collaboration."

Did you know that the F22 is the best air dominance fighter in the world and we couldn't build any more even if we wanted to. It was cancelled in 2011 by the obama administration!

“One recently retired Air Force official with direct knowledge about the service’s efforts to repair two damaged Raptors said that they faced severe difficulties with retrieving the correct tooling. In one example, Air Force maintainers needed to build a particular component from scratch to replace a severely damaged part for an F-22. The crews went into the Conex boxes where the tooling and instructions to build the part were allegedly stored, but to their considerable surprise and aggravation, the container was empty. The same pattern repeated itself several times—and as of the last time the source checked–the issue remains unresolved. The bottom line is that even if the Air Force wanted to, it may not be physically possible to restart the line—at least not without a huge additional investment in time and money.”

Dont worry, Northrop has made advancements on that design for their upcoming reveal.
