Donald Trump calls off Mike Pompeo's planned trip to North Korea

US President Donald Trump on Friday (Aug 24) cancelled Secretary of State Mike Pompeo’s planned trip to North Korea for renewed negotiations to persuade it to abandon its nuclear weapons, citing insufficient progress on the issue.

Trump partly blamed China for the stalled momentum with North Korea and suggested talks with Pyongyang could be on hold until after Washington resolved its trade dispute with Beijing.

It was a dramatic shift of tone for Trump, who had previously hailed his June summit with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un as a success and said the North Korean nuclear threat was over.
“I have asked Secretary of State Mike Pompeo not to go to North Korea, at this time, because I feel we are not making sufficient progress with respect to the denuclearisation of the Korean Peninsula,” Trump said on Twitter

Well, it isn't always a good thing to be right. I do wish North Korea would have turned out differently.

It is legitimately debatable as to whether North Korea had any real intention to disarm or if US lack of concessions has prompted North Korea to reduce its commitment.

North Korea's senior official Kim Yong-chol reportedly told U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo not to visit Pyongyang unless he is willing to offer something.

Reuters quoted a senior U.S. official on Thursday as saying that the letter to Pompeo said that North Korea believed the U.S. was not doing enough.The report said that U.S. officials are concerned that North Korea may attempt to strike a separate deal with South Korea, in a bid to drive a wedge between the South and the U.S.

According to CNN on Tuesday, North Korea warned in the letter that denuclearization talks were "again at stake and may fall apart."

North Korea sees denuclearization as something that can only happen once the United States declares the Korean War over. To them, they have always been on the brink of war because it's something that's never ended. The idea of the war being on "pause" has never left their mind. For us here in the west, we just go about our business without thinking about it. But the war has never ended, and the threat is very real to them. Hence why they feel the need to build nuclear weapons- if the war is still ongoing, but only on pause, and the Soviet Union collapsed, and China has been making better relations with the west, what stops the United States from doing to them what they did to Iraq and Libya? They want security guarantees, and the only way they will get that is if the war is declared over. The United States will only declare the war over if North Korea makes a major reduction in their nuclear arsenal. Hence the major catch-22 that we are in. I guarantee you, without any more concessions on the side of the United States, the talks will definitely break down.

Well, I mean nothing is set in stone. I could get struck by lightning tomorrow for all we know. But yes, it failed because the US had failed to see the NK point of view for decades now. It's really sad

Yes but when this all goes belly up we are left in even a further worse crisis with DPRK then before. Just saying Trump made not a single thing better for DPRK relations and the ugly facts are rearing there heads now. Which now leads me back to the first point of leaving us in worse crisis, status quo would of at least kept the crisis stable... The status quo is something Trump douse not understand nor the attention span to learn.

Let me first say that I am no fan of the President, but he did make more of an effort with North Korea than his predecessors. His meeting with Kim Jong Un was historic, on the level of Nixon going to China. The problem is I don't think it matters who the President is, North Korea isn't going to change anytime soon. They have historically shown a willingness to talk or negotiate, then walk away from the table with some real or imagined slight towards them. But that doesn't mean we should stop trying. Talking is always better than fighting.
