Federal Responce to Aid Crippled Supply Chain

What is this about and what is the natural disaster that's related to it?
Its about the Covid-19 supply chain issues we been talking about in the natural disaster sub forums for months. Where you been?

The story is quite unique and deserves it's own thread. The significance is big if all major ports are ordered to operate 24/7. This could help a lot with the bottle neck on supplying American stores from food to electronics.

⚠️
Biden has spoke with FedEx, UPS, Walmart, & USPS. All four companies will now be working in overdrive. In most places will now also work 24/7 driving containers off the bottlenecked cargo ships.

It will double the time the ports operate. Long Beach port is now working 24/7 along with L.A:
Sounds like Biden is federalizing the supply chain mechanisms I.E trucking, shipping, and cargo all going to be regulated even more by the feds?

Doubtful just kicking them in the arse and cutting a deal for future tax incentives.
Regardless of supply chain issues or money the ports need to be 24/7. All other ports around the world are. We the only country that operate ports durring the week and day only.

Maybe or maybe it has nothing to do with the logistics of getting the containers off the ships. But getting the containers out of the port staging areas do to trucking or railway traffic flow.
The port of LA is on track to seeing a 15%+ freight flow this year.
Anyway you look at that, that’s a significant increase.

Abusulty. That's why Biden talked to FedEx, UPS, Walmart, & USPS to overhaul the trucking end to get those containers flowing overnight and the weekends.

Ok I’ve got to be snarky here,
I doubt seriously the the federal government is going to have anything useful to add or advice to supply chain and logistics issues to Wal-Mart-Mart, Fed-Ex, or UPS.
And as far as incentives go, more freight means more profit for Fed-Ex and UPS. All three of them already run round the clock.
My point though was There are only so many trains schedules you can run into and out of Los Angels. And given LA traffic I’m sure most OTR drivers would want to get in and get out of LA at night.

Also I haven’t read anything specifically related to this issue yet but Federal courts have upheld California law AB-5 contract labor designation this past may.
A lot of trucking companies pay drivers by the mile. That puts a serious bite into the number of tractors that can be diverted into Cali to pick up the backlog.
Sure companies that make the bulk of their business hauling in and out of Cali would have adjusted their drivers employment status and pay structure to accommodate this local state law. But if it’s not they just don’t load in or out of Cali when demand dictates.
Maybe this is a constitutional issue where California is trying to impose its will on the other 47 states violating the commerce clause?

We will have to wait for further comments today. Yesterday was just a announcement and not entirely a plan laid out other than running the ports 24/7 & overdriving the trucking side to pick up the ports feet.

Apparently the ports had a problem with the unions to operate 24/7. Guess Biden is using the federal government to overrule the union and go ahead to operate none stop. Making the union unable to go to court about it or fight it it seems.

Of the recent articles Ive read it sounds like a typical logistic nightmare. Flow starting and stopping all along the pipeline.
Anyone who’s ever marched in formation knows that you always want to try and be at the front of the line not that back. “Good Incentive to get out of your bunk fast when the empty trash can hits the floor”. Every time their is a sputter along that line it just causes misery all down the line. Chinese port closes for two weeks “stutter”.
Truckers don’t have trailers or chassis available at the port (stutter). importers front load their imports because of fears of another lockdown or god forbid a supply chain issue (stutter)
It will smooth out.
The real question then is is it a widespread shortage or just a disrupted out of joint delivery system that will settle down without the TEOTWAWKI occurring.
Mostly I think it’s a out of joint supply chain
It will likely settle down early winter.

I’m still waiting on a Christmas present from last year to get hear from Germany .

To cut the unions some slack “a little” anyway.
Some of those jobs are pretty high skilled jobs. I’m thinking the crane and derick operators. Those aren’t the type of jobs you would want a person doing tired or with a 8 hour crash course on how to operate it. And depending the organic flow of freight off - freight sorted is established it could be a difficult thing reshuffle. Misplace a 20 lb box in the warehouse not the end of the world. Bury a trailer under three others four rows in thats due to be loaded on a train tomorrow - kind of a big thing.
Got to have people sharp and trained to pull that off with minimal hitches.
