The French forces scare away a total of four nuclear-powered submarines of the Le Triomphant type. These are units with a length of 138 m and a displacement of 14,335 tons, each of which has sixteen M51 ICBMs on board. All Le Triomphant submarines are part of the ocean strategic forces FOSt (la Force océanique stratégique) stationed near Brest (at the L'île Longue base).
