They say that California is covered in a huge blanket of slow moving high pressure so what could possibly have caused the storms that produced all that lightning?

Nevermind, I found the answer.

Yep, and, go figure, I picked the worst time possible to come back to the Bay Area. I'm in San Jose right now, and the air quality index is around 150, categorized as "unhealthy". The family and I are just sitting inside with the windows closed and the HVAC unit turned off. If conditions deteriorate, we might try to head back north again.
