Holiday Food & Their Growing Price

Did you check out the price of a rib roast? It's been a tradition in my family to have turkey for Thanksgiving, pork for Christmas and beef for New Years. Is there a shortage of cows or something! The price of beef is ridicules! :mad:

Not really... I am ovo/lacto vegetarian, perhaps a modest pescatarian though I am cutting back on seafood. So i am normally blind to beef, pork, and poultry prices.

Honestly there is a lot that goes into "affordability", and it's not fair to blame it all on the economic policies of the President. In some cases there may be real supply challenges (ex. cow shortages) or a spike in demand for something. Our beef is mostly domestic, including the grain used to feed cattle. I suspect tariffs are not playing a direct role in high beef prices. But there might be something in the supply chain for beef I'm not thinking of that tariffs might be impacting.
Either way, I am looking forward to the President's address to see what he is actually going to talk about, and then, post speech, watch all the pundits circle their wagons on both sides of the aisle to duke it out against each other.

Used to be that we could purchase a 1/4 side of a cow for roughly the same price as my hunting license and cost of processing a deer. I've started giving my wife the option each year of buying the 1/4 side or I kill a deer for a huge chunk of our annual meat supply. This year the 1/4 cow was twice as much as my license and processing would have been.

She's okay with that because she prefers the taste of beef to venison (the uncultured Philistine), but if it goes up much higher, It will be cheaper for me to get my license and process three deer instead of one, and we'll get more meat out of it.

Both of our raises this year will do nothing except offset all the rising prices, which puts us in better shape than a lot of people, but it's still infuriating to witness not only complete disregard for America's poor, but outright hostility towards them. Because that's what Jesus would have done, y'know. :rolleyes:

You can feed the poor, or you can simply present them with an enemy. Both options work, and since making enemies is much easier than making bread, no wonder it's usually the preferred course of action for those in charge.

That's how it's always been since the dawn of mankind.

It's not, though. The US produces more than enough food to make sure no American citizen ever goes hungry. Every single year, the US throws out or otherwise wastes over 50 million tons of food. That's almost half of our annual food production. Why? Because gods forbid we take all those groceries that haven't sold by their expiration date and donate it all to food banks and other charities. We'd rather throw it in the dumpster instead. Who the fuck thinks like that?

Probably. But we all know that food expiration dates in the US are extremely conservative, and a can of soup that is one day past its expiration date is not going to make a single person sick, let alone kill anyone. I once ate some ravioli five years past its use-by date, and there was nothing wrong with it. So expiration dates are bullshit in most instances.

Who made those laws? And who says we can't amend them to make exceptions for the homeless and impoverished?

I disagree with this to a point. My wife runs the local food pantry and she gets allot of donations from private citizens as well as corporations. I do agree that the US wastes allot of food though.

That is false, it was warmer back then then it was 100 years ago, but climate change since pre industrial periods has reversed that. It may have been true when you were a kid still, though.

I always offer pork to the wife as a choice. She usually chooses venison or one of our herds (we sell them, not eat them as venison is low cost and Swine is free (cartridge + license(null)* -bounty on ferals).

*my licensing is free, a thank you from a grateful State (along with Auto plates, property tax etc)
