His plastic bottle was melting in the video from the condensing steam. You could probably get that 1 cup he did in the video then that's it. Another solution I could think of is if you could clamp a metal baking tray on the top of the bottle and have it at an angle, then point the bottom of the tray into a pan.
Still worth getting hold of the proper kit, it's not too expensive, and it works far better. Also only use the plastic bottle approach in an emergency, because I guarantee you're gonna get a ton of plastic in your water.

@Yingyang 's post, yes it does remove the majority of salt. Good if you're trying to remove radioactive fallout, but that could be a problem if you have a limited diet (i.e. white rice only). If you don't get the salts you need in your diet that you usually get from tap water, you could ironically get dehydrated from drinking distilled water.
