Japan Considering Its Own Nuclear Weapons

Jokes aside, am I the only one finding it oddly concerning yet, shockingly not shocking that the entire developed world wants nukes now?

I don’t see how this doesn’t end with a dozen more countries having nuclear weapons by 2050.

It’s all under the guise of improving national security. What they really want, IMO is to prevent a big bully state from “appropriating” their national resources, and “creating democracy”. Seems ever more likely now, in a world where wars will be fought over water, rare earth metals, etc.
The U.S., Russia, and China have been exporting civil nuclear "packages" to their friends & allies for years such as reactors, training, and the broader nuclear infrastructure construction.

Once a country runs a “peaceful” program, it’s partway to a weapons option. You’ve built the talent base, fuel handling know how, security culture, and the political case for a full fuel cycle. The hard red line is access to weapons grade material but the learning curve and leverage are already there once you run a nuclear power plant.

Yes, many buyers genuinely want electricity. Fuel take back deals and IAEA safeguards help, but a determined state can hedge, nationalize later, or replicate lessons learned. So the risk isn’t just more reactors it’s more threshold states by 2050. Not open bomb holders... yet.
