No earthquake induced reactor SCRAMs or significant nuclear facility abnormalities have been reported following the M5.9 earthquake beneath southern Ibaraki, Japan at approximately 02:00 JST on August 23.
The earthquake occurred at an estimated depth of 70 km and produced maximum JMA intensity 5 lower shaking across parts of Ibaraki, Saitama, Chiba & Tokyo. No tsunami threat was issued.
Tokai & Tokai 2 remained without reported abnormalities. Tokai is under decommissioning and Tokai 2 was already shut down.
Onagawa Unit 2 remained online, with Tohoku Electric generation data showing output remaining essentially steady following the earthquake. Unit 1 is under decommissioning and Unit 3 was already shut down.
No reactor trip has been reported at Kashiwazaki Kariwa. Unit 6 remains the station’s operating reactor, while Units 1 through 5 and Unit 7 were already shut down.
Fukushima Daiichi & Fukushima Daini have no operating power reactors, with no earthquake related nuclear safety emergency reported.
Hamaoka also had no operating reactors capable of undergoing a SCRAM, with Units 1 & 2 permanently shut down and Units 3 through 5 offline.
As of the latest operator and regulator checks, no earthquake induced SCRAMs, nuclear safety emergencies or significant abnormalities have been reported at nuclear facilities within the affected and surrounding region.
