If you've never indulged yourself outside of Western television, you are too insular.
The Japanese culture is widely know for being...well...straight-laced. (Consider a Private Party at Disneyland for Japanese families. Not a single scrap of litter all night. I know. I was there. I worked it.)
So, when it comes to downtime, they like to let go. And by letting go, I mean they really let go.
Japanese game shows, unlike Western game shows, thrive on extremism, humour, torture, and humiliation.
And Oh My Gosh they are funny!
If you have never seen one of these, look them up. YouTube is a good source, but mind you a lot of the videos are flagged for adults, so you'll need to sign in and verify your age to see them. Some really aren't suitable for children. (Consider one race where one obstacle was...well...I won't say. But it was "adult" to say the least. You won't see anything, but you know what is happening.)
Honestly, get rid of the egghead game shows in the US and bring some of these over. I'd love to see a game show where someone tries to endure 20,000 volts of electricity. I really would. Okay, and the human slip-and-slide looked pretty cool too.
