It may sound crazy today, but public service used to be regarded as a calling, and attracted some talented and (mostly) ethical individuals. Yes, lying has always been part and parcel of politics, but there was also moderation, and some unwritten rules were generally respected. Thus the world's democracies stood strong.I thought you had to be a liar to be a politician.
Sorry I know not directed to me but I'll take a shot with wild unfounded speculation if permitted? Actually imo. Greed ,money,power and confidence of getting away with what ever they want because the population doesn't-can't do shit once voting is over and they win from misleading false beliefs and lies to achieve self gains. Could be wrong. What other excuses are there?
That means don't vote but in Australia it is compulsory and you will be fined if you don't vote but nothing stops handing in a blank form. The problem in Australia is the compulsory preferential system Even if you vote for non major parties the preferences will always fall down to one of the major parties. That is why I believe we should have optional preferential voting which we did have for a while in Queensland but the government got a fright as the vote 1 for labor campaign did not work so they reverted back to a compulsory preferential system.

You could point to a lot of factors - economic, social, technological and such. Generally, though, times were good; politics didn't seem to matter all that much; the more level-headed people started drifting away to other walks of life. After all - why pursue a political career when the private sector offers far better alternatives for the talented individual? There even came a time where declaring in polite company that you were interested in politics would get you funny looks - sort of like getting caught picking your nose in public...

And just as the centrist majority gradually stopped caring, the lunatic fringe was waiting on the sidelines - like a primary tumor getting ready to metastasize. Perhaps things might have stayed that way, but then social media happened, and suddenly every John Q. Tinfoilhat was handed a metaphorical bullhorn and trotted out in front of a curious audience. The consequences are out there for all to see: the last 20 years have been marked by unchecked spread of the most harebrained conspiracy theories imaginable. Masses of people now believe in stuff that would make a seven-year-old cringe back in the day. Is it really a surprise that ruthless politicians came out of the woodwork to capitalize...?
Course, the above is just my personal opinion; YMMV.
