An explosion at a Russian military base killed three personnel and caused a brief spike in radioactivity in a nearby Russian city. The Russian Defense Ministry has said that no “dangerous substances” were released into the atmosphere during the incident, but other government agencies reported that radiation readings briefly spiked before receding to normal levels.

The incident reportedly took place today near the village of Nenoksa, where a Russian Navy missile test range is located. Although the Russian government hasn’t given time specifics, radiation levels in the area started to rise about 10 minutes before 12 p.m. local time. The location is also 29 miles west of Severodvinsk, a city of 185,000.

According to The Barents Observer, the explosion took place on a barge or ship. The Russian Ministry of Defense, quoted by Russian state media, stated: "As a result of the accident, six representatives of the Ministry of Defense and a developer enterprise were injured of varying severity. Two specialists died from the wounds received. All the victims were promptly taken to a medical facility, where they received the necessary medical care."

Most news reports state two dead and eight wounded from the incident, but The Independent Barents Observer says that three were killed and 15 wounded—eight seriously.

The Ministry of Defense made clear that "there were no harmful emissions into the atmosphere, the radiation background is normal." Greenpeace, on the other hand, citing data from the government’s own Emergencies Ministry, revealed that radiation levels in Severodvinsk briefly reached 20 times normal levels. Greenpeace called on the Russian government to explain the release.

The BBC, in its reporting of the incident, wrote, “A woman in Severodvinsk named only Alina told Russian news site lenta.ru: 'I work in the hospital where they're bringing the injured. They advise everyone to close their windows and drink iodine, 44 drops per glass of water.'"

The U.S. Centers for Disease Control (CDC) says potassium iodide is used to prevent the buildup of the radioactive isotope Iodine-131 in the thyroid gland, which could lead to thyroid cancer. Iodine-131, the CDC explains, “is produced commercially for medical and industrial uses through nuclear fission. It also is a byproduct of nuclear fission processes in nuclear reactors and weapons testing.”

A Russian maritime authority, the Administration of Western Arctic Ports, announced shipping and sailing would be prohibited for a month in Dvina Bay, which is in an area of the White Sea close to the military range where the fire took place.

This and other isolated, windblown inlets off the Arctic Ocean are home to the Northern Fleet, seen as the most important of the five branches of the Russian Navy. The others are the Pacific fleet, the Baltic Fleet, the Black Sea fleet and the Caspian flotilla.

Analysts have blamed past accidents, including the sinking of the Kursk, on the threadbare state of the post-Soviet navy. But competition for dominance over the thawing Arctic Ocean has elevated the Northern Fleet’s importance today, said Ivan Konovalov, director of the Center for Strategic Trends, and the Kremlin has poured in resources.

“When there is high intensity training and testing, there is also a higher chance of something unexpected or tragic,” he said.

Russian news media reported contradictory details about the accident.

Tass, citing an unidentified emergency services official, reported that a fire had broken out onboard a vessel of Russia’s Northern Fleet northwest of Severodvinsk. An earlier report by Interfax had said the episode occurred at a weapons testing range.

Rumors about a radiation leak was first reported by https://29.ru/text/incidents/66190348/ referring to emergency services saying radiation levels were three times higher than normal background.

The news portal quotes Valentin Magomedov, head of the Civil Protection Department of the administration in Severodvinsk saying that two sensors in town for a short period measued increase in background radiation.

«From 11.50 to 12.30, the increase in radiation background began. As of 14.00, the readings of the sensors did not exceed 0.11 The radiation background in Severodvinsk is normal,» he said.

Also the Arkhangelsk-based news agency Region 29 reports about measuring of increased level of radiation following the explosion.

Sensors in Severodvinsk with automated system for monitoring radiation responded to increased indicators,» the agency reports with reference to the local emergency services. The levels reported from Nyonoksa are three times higher than normal. The news agency tells that also the administration of Severodvinsk informed about a slight increase in radiation, but “…. it has now returned to normal.”

It is unclear if the explosion happened on land or at sea. The Defense Ministry says «testing ground in the Arkhangelsk region», while several of the reports from regional media refer to the accident happened onboard a barge or a ship. The only known weapon systems with nuclear propulsion under development and testing are the Poseidon underwater drone and the Burevestnik cruise missile.

Nyonoksa is located 25 kilometers west of Severodvinsk in Arkhangelsk region. The test site was established in 1965 and are mainly engaged in testing prototypes of different submarine missiles.

In December 2015, the test site made headlines in Russian media and the Barents Observerafter a cruise missile accidentally hit an apartment block in the nearby village.

This comes to no shock, the state of the Russian Military is very poor, not well maintained, or built well at all. No surprise.

In fact the list of accidents in Russia involving military or nuclear facilities accidents is a long long list.

The explosion of a secretive isotope-powered missile engine was so powerful that it blew the device into pieces and threw workers off a sea platform, Russian nuclear agency Rosatom said. Searches for the missing went on all day.
Dramatic details of the tragedy that rocked the Arkhangelsk region this week, and that fueled western tabloids with rumors of a new Chernobyl-like disaster, were shared by the state atomic energy corporation on Saturday.

It revealed that the blast, which killed five employees and seriously injured three others, took place on a sea platform and followed a series of trials.

The test of the classified “liquid-propellant engine” went smoothly at first, but then the device caught fire and blew up, Rosatom said.

Hard to get real information out of Russia on this. Still attempting to verify what is real, what is propaganda, and what is made up.

This was a test of their stupid, ignorant ass nuclear powered cruise missile. It has failed every test so far but none have blown up like this. Most just did a dive into the ocean.

They have sealed off the base and an area of the white sea for a month and i bet it is a lot longer.

Russian military have been spotted in full nuclear saftey gear and people are freaking out. The article i found was on the Drudge report site. Im on my phone and its too early for a Sunday lol.

The US Airforce tried to make a nuclear powered bomber in the 60s but people were smart enough to know that it would spew rads out the exhaust everytime it flew and that was a stupid idea.

I can somewhat understand if your launching a nuclear weapon, at that point who really cares but isnt the idea to win and to not kill your own people first? Russia now has two weapons there is no way to test in any sane persons mind yet they just paid the piper for testing one.

This proves to the whole world that they can not be trusted with ANYTHING.

The failed missile test that ended in an explosion killing five scientists last week on Russia’s White Sea involved a small nuclear reactor, according to a top official at the institute where they worked.

The institute is working on small-scale power sources that use “radioactive materials, including fissile and radioisotope materials” for the Defense Ministry and civilian uses, Vyacheslav Soloviev, scientific director of the institute, said in a video shown by local TV.

The men, who will be buried Monday, were national heroes and the “elite of the Russian Federal Nuclear Center,” institute Director Valentin Kostyukov said in the video, which was also posted on an official website in Sarov, a high-security city devoted to nuclear research less than 400 kilometers (250 miles) east of Moscow.

The blast occurred Aug. 8 during a test of a missile that used “isotope power sources” on an offshore platform in the Arkhangelsk region, close to the Arctic Circle, Russia’s state nuclear company Rosatom said over the weekend. The Defense Ministry initially reported two were killed in the accident, which it said involved testing of a liquid-fueled missile engine. The ministry didn’t mention the nuclear element.

The President of the United States
The United States is learning much from the failed missile explosion in Russia. We have similar, though more advanced, technology. The Russian “Skyfall” explosion has people worried about the air around the facility, and far beyond. Not good!

Russian media reports that planned new tests at the Severodvinsk site where the missile exploded have been cancelled, and villagers don't have to evacuate for two hours tomorrow morning after all. The publicity for this evacuation became too uncomfortable.

Locals from the closed military settlement on the White Sea coast were today told that they will have to leave the area on Wednesday morning between 5-7 am.

The evacuation is planned and has nothing to do with last week’s missile explosion, representatives of Russian military authorities explained to the locals, 29.ru reports. Trains will pick up the locals and bring them out of the area.

«This is a planned measure, it happens regularly - about once per month and everybody is evaluated away from the village,» a local inhabitant told 29.ru.

«Previously, some locals remained in the village, but now after the recent events, I think they will evacuate everyone,» the local added.

The village located on the coast of the White Sea about 20 km west of Severodvinsk has a population of about 450 people

Arkhangelsk doctors who assisted the victims of the explosion near the village of Nenoksa were sent for a medical examination in Moscow. Earlier , three people who worked at the training ground were sent to the capital . According to a 29.RU source, doctors initiated this examination, fearing for their health after contact with patients who arrived from the scene.

- The Government of the Arkhangelsk Region is implementing a set of preventive measures as additional control measures following the results of the incident in the Nenoksy area. Activities include, among other things, examination of employees of medical organizations involved in the provision of medical assistance to victims. This examination is initiated by the workers themselves — they can be examined at the federal center, ”the Government of the Arkhangelsk Region informed 29.RU.
