North Korea called Thursday for replacing U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo with a "more careful and mature" negotiator, accusing the top American diplomat of failing to understand Pyongyang's position and causing the denuclearization talks to become "entangled."
"I am afraid that, if Pompeo engages in the talks again, the table will be lousy once again and the talks will become entangled," Kwon Jong-gun, director general of the ministry's American affairs department, told KCNA.

"Therefore, even in the case of possible resumption of the dialogue with the U.S., I wish our dialogue counterpart would be not Pompeo but (an)other person who is more careful and mature in communicating with us," he added.

The United States said Wednesday that it remains ready to have "constructive" talks with North Korea, a response to reports of a personnel shuffle involving the regime's top nuclear negotiator.

A spokesperson for the State Department said the U.S. is aware of the reports, but did not address questions about how the move will affect nuclear disarmament talks between Washington and Pyongyang.

North Korea's vice foreign minister said on Tuesday the United States will face "undesired consequences" if it fails to present a new position in denuclearization talks by the end of the year, state media reported.

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un has set a year-end deadline for the United States to show more flexibility after his second summit with U.S. President Donald Trump failed to produce a deal to end Pyongyang's nuclear program in return for sanctions relief.
