NATO Will Set Up Commands to Soothe Nervous Eastern Europe

BRUSSELS — NATO defense ministers are expected to agree next week to set up command units, staffed with national and NATO soldiers, in six Eastern European allies as part of a new strategy in response to the Ukraine crisis, NATO's chief said on Friday.

Creating the units in Poland, Romania, Bulgaria and the three Baltic countries is one of the most concrete steps NATO has taken to show that the alliance will protect its eastern allies, some of which are nervous about Russian intentions following Moscow's annexation of Ukraine's Crimea region.

Not sure how well this will soothe Eastern Europe, but it's nice to see that NATO is doing something.

As is the Usual the NATO force will most likely contain of at least 40% American Forces. A rough estimate on my part but i could be wrong.

Exactly where does this estimate come from? I mean, surely there will be American forces (with an army as large as ours, there's practically more than enough men to go around right?), but 40% seems to large of a number. I'd put it closer to 10%, as Germany, France and the UK each have strong respective armies, and the logistics of sending European troops is a much easier task than getting men from overseas.

The US will always have a huge percentage so 40% is probably pretty close.

Well i cant remember if its 20,000 or 200,000...No its 20,000 because we only have 450,000 Active troops. But anyway we still have 20,000 US troops on a Pacific Island just south of main-island Japan. Along with the larger Navy we have deployed their.

I believe the island you're referring to is Okinawa, and if we're putting the same amount of troops into Eastern Europe as we have on one Japanese Island, then wow, that's a huge maneuver.

I was just stating that we have men their with whats going on between China and Japan. If we were to deploy that many men to Europe...well that would just be a dumb ass move on anyone's part. But anyway news just came out the UK will be have the largest number of men deployed in the new NATO base their in Europe with over 1000 brits.

Good to see some sort of prophylactic measures. When the spam hits the fan, who do you suppose the luke warm NATO allies will be screaming for to save their pinko opportunist asses?
Who do you suppose is going to have to shoulder the load of man power, equipment and casualties?
Yeah.
The NATO allies have run down their military's capabilities to do anything meaningful; IE: break stuff and hurt people.
Netherlands even sold off all their armies heavy equipment. Its a truck mounted light infantry force nowadays, and most of the other NATO members are in the same boat.
Now the bear is back at the door.
And short of Putin dying next week (auto-erotic asphyxiation would be nice, Come on! Sic a seal team on that schmuck already!)
War is almost inevitable now. The longer this goes on, and the further the craptastic russian economy slides, the more desperate and dangerous Putin will become.
As the folks at home get hungry and pissed, the pressure rises for the macho man to move.
When it comes. it will be full on, and a suckerpunch. Putin cannot afford nor does he have the wherewithall for a protracted large scale conventional slugfest.
Ergo: he has to punch out the west's will to fight with the opening plan of fires.
Honestly, and international convention be dammed, we should be targeting these loonies directly and violently, Clancy doctrine.

Its a statement that Britain's power is not dead. Many perceive Britain as weak here after the cold war, so this is to show their undivided commitment to NATO, and that they have the resources to defend themselves. Its just politics.

Glad to hear someone say that. While the days of Britain's empire are surely over (their last major colony Hong Kong was given back to China in 1997), their influence is not gone. One could argue that along with Germany, the United Kingdom could be the second most powerful European member of NATO behind Germany*.


*Germany is the greatest economic power in the region, and as a result, has a great deal of leverage

Guess that's why everyone looks to Germany to pay the bill of the debtor countries right?

I've got to agree with you their, Germany has always been a economic and militaristic bad ass when it comes to history even before it was Germany. i.e. Prussia, And i think it will always stay that way. Until either the world ends or they majestically get taken over by another nation.

I dont want to start an argument but i think the United States of America has proven it will fight to the death when its on our own territory and i would die for America as im sure the rest of you would die for your countries, well if your patriots, but personally i think the only 4 nations on this planet that can not be contained or taken over would be

1. America- Everyone has guns, who the hell doesn't here? I'm also taking into account the war for independence and the French and Indian war. 2. Russia- World War 2 was their strong point in this, they threw themselves at the Nazi Army when they came marching, even the ones who didn't have guns, and lost over 11 million men stopping the Nazi Armies not to count the 7-20 million Civilian casualties. Tied for 3 and 4. Germany and the UK- It was hard to decide who would come first, Germany or Britain, they both proved themselves in World War 2 more than once.


feel free to correct me or argue or add other nations if you wish im not too big a history buff for any other nations other then America. The timeline i used started from the early 1800s.
