NPP ALERT | An automatic reactor trip at Summer Unit 1 in South Carolina. The reactor shut down after a turbine trip while at 100 percent power.
The plant’s emergency feedwater system kicked in to remove decay heat, which is standard. A generator field breaker locked out and there was a small fire in that breaker area, but the onsite fire brigade extinguished it in under 15 minutes.
The unit was stabilized in hot standby using emergency feedwater and main condenser steam dumps.
NRC classed this as a non-emergency report under 10 CFR 50.72, said there was no impact on public or plant personnel safety, and noted the resident inspector was notified. NRC is still issuing these safety notifications even while broader agency operations are limited by the federal funding lapse.
