MANILA, Philippines (AP) — Two Philippine supply boats breached a Chinese coast guard blockade in the South China Sea on Wednesday in a recurring confrontation near a disputed shoal some fear could spark a larger security crisis that could draw in the United States.

Two Philippine coast guard ships escorted the smaller supply boats, but it wasn’t immediately clear whether the ships were blocked by the Chinese coast guard from coming closer to the Second Thomas Shoal, where a small contingent of Filipino marines has stood guard for years aboard a long-marooned but still actively commissioned warship, the BRP Sierra Madre.

In early August, a Chinese coast guard ship used a water cannon against one of two Philippine supply boats to prevent it from approaching the Second Thomas Shoal. The brazen move, which was caught on video, outraged President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. and prompted the Department of Foreign Affairs in Manila to summon the Chinese ambassador to hand a strongly worded protest.

Washington reacted by renewing a warning that it’s obligated to defend the Philippines, its oldest treaty ally in Asia, if Filipino forces, aircraft and vessels come under an armed attack, including in the South China Sea.

Later in August, the Philippines again deployed two boats, which succeeded in maneuvering past the Chinese coast guard blockade and completing the delivery of supplies to the Filipino forces at the Second Thomas shoal. Two Philippine coast guard ships securing the supply boats, however, were blocked and prevented by Chinese coast guard ships from maneuvering closer to the shoal. A U.S. Navy surveillance aircraft flew in circles in support of the Philippine vessels as the standoff lasted for more than three hours.

Maybe about time for the chinese to experience some losses and a real loss of face and humiliation to make them realise they are not untouchables. The US has reminded them verbally but maybe the time has come for a physical demonstration to let them know they are not kidding and not willing to take the chinese crap any more.

US looking to bolster Philippines' ability to operate in its waters

Came to my attention we didnt have a blanket thread for Philippines reporting. We have two Philippines threads but entirly to specific for past events that wouldn't fall under general reporting for tensions in the region.

The United States has announced that it will provide $500m in military funding to the Philippines, as the pair eyes ongoing tensions with China.
The announcement came on Tuesday, as US Secretary of State Antony Blinken and Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin visited Manila. The two officials launched an Asia Pacific tour over the weekend, aimed at boosting Washington’s influence in the region in a bid to challenge the “strategic challenge” Beijing poses.

Ships from China and the Philippines have collided during a confrontation in the disputed South China Sea, with each blaming the other for the incident. The collision took place at 3:24am local time on Monday (19:24 GMT on Sunday) at Sabina Shoal, which lies about 140km (86 miles) west of the Philippine island of Palawan, the closest major land mass.

China Coast Guard spokesperson Gan Yu accused the Philippines of “illegally” entering the waters around the disputed atoll and deliberately colliding with the Chinese ship. “The China Coast Guard took control measures against the Philippine vessels in accordance with the law,” Gan said.

Like I just posted in another thread words stop having any meaningful context. It would be better to simply stop talking

Philippine Coast Guard ship in standoff with China returns to port

A Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) vessel that spent months anchored at a disputed reef in the South China Sea has left the area, but a new vessel is being deployed “immediately” to replace it, Philippine officials announced, in a move that is likely to irk China.

BRP Teresa Magbanua had been anchored inside Sabina Shoal since April to assert the Philippine claims to the area within its exclusive economic zone, and to prevent China from seizing it.
