that was actually a little disconcerting, but let me prove you wrong. Why is one flying to Russian airspace and the other is staying in NATO airspace?

at least 1 of theirs does.
 
USAF F-16s and Finnish F-18s are starting joint training today. Swedish Gripens will join them later this week.

Both aircraft are 'squawking' civil transponder frequency codes, which is what a civil ATC radar 'sees'. A transponder is a radio beacon that transmits the code set on the transponder in the cockpit by the aircrew in response to a coded signal transmitted in the radar sweep. The transponder codes are issued by ATC so the traffic controllers can keep track of air traffic. If the flight operations were 'operational', the transponder is switched off, and a secure 'IFF' (Identification, Friend or Foe) is used, which is encrypted and un available to civil radar, and only responds to an encrypted signal in military radar sets. Military radar sets are tuned to 'see' the actual 'skin paint' of signals reflected back to the radar set as well, and use a variety of methods to see things like altitude and vertical speed. In civil aircraft, the transponder transmits this information by reading it from the aircraft's instruments.

Last time I looked, they were descending, perhaps went low, below the radar coverage, orrrr....(ominous music) switched the xpndrs to standby.

Thats not RADAR tracking, I've followed flights to the ground before. Looks like they stopped squawking.
