"Only an insane person and only in a dream can imagine that Russia would suddenly attack Nato"

Do you guys believe what he is saying or could it be just another trick?

Anyways, here is the full article: http://www.bbc.com/news/world-europe-33034844

Maybe, but that doesn't account for Putin's moves thus far. It is however, an interesting gesture.

Who know's what Putin has in mind, and what he will do next, but there are some interesting stuff in this interview.

Much like a parent telling their child that they are taking him to Disneyland, but the child in reality is going to the dentist.

Anyone will attack anyone is the circumstances are right.

Russia does not want a military confrontation with Nato. But they will defend Crimea because they want that warm water port. If they've convinced themselves that Crimea is full of Russian people, then so much more will they defend it.

Says nothing about Donetsk People's Republic attacking NATO.

Russia isn't even involved in Ukraine, didn't you hear? It's all the rebels. And you know rebels, they're just crazy!

So basically you're saying that Russia will defend Crimea, but will not go to war (or more specifically, perform offensive actions) against NATO?

I guess that makes sense. After all Putin is still in my opinion, not crazy, as he's a strategist, and can keep a cool head.

I know I've said this before, but if somebody crazier than Putin steps into play, then I'd be worried, (and creating an inner refuge).

Didn't Hitler say something similar before WW2? I'm betting that he's just trying to get the sanctions lifted.

Yes and his henchmen.

"What Germany needs and wants is peace. Our desire for peace is not just empty words but has been proven by practical examples. The work of reconstruction in Germany needs calm development of many years."

German Navy chief Admiral Raeder at an Anschluss anniversary event, whilst watched approvingly by Hitler, 16/3/39

"For years past I have expressed my abhorrence of war, and I am not aware for what purpose I should wage a war at all."

Adolf Hitler, Reichstag speech, 28/4/39

I've got UK Press archive access, there's loads of this stuff. So Putin's latest interview actually unnerves me more than the nuclear threats, if you follow the rule of thumb that whatever Putin says, he is likely to do the opposite. :?

That's certainly worrying. I did not know that Hitler said almost the same thing.
For our sake, let's hope he is saying the truth.

I wouldn't go that far. The way I see it playing out -- if it comes to that -- is that Russia will feel it has no choice to react to whatever provocation Nato is doing, real or imagined.

However, you are right that Putin isn't crazy. So he isn't looking for a fight with Nato. On the other hand, he isn't willing to back away from one, either.

That's why I picked the word 'suddenly' out of his comments.

JCS Chair Dempsey Issues Response to Putin's 'Don't Fear' Statements

Russia is seeking to “discredit and eventually undermine” NATO, chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Gen. Martin Dempsey said in an interview published shortly after President Vladimir Putin said only a madman would think of Russia as a threat to NATO.

“I can’t tell you, as we sit here today, precisely what Putin and Russia intend to do,” Dempsey said in the interview to the Wall Street Journal. “They have demonstrated some behaviors outside the international order that clearly indicate that they are willing to push beyond what most of the nations with whom we deal consider to be international norms.”

Dempsey also called on the NATO allies to “harden against the subversive activities Russia has demonstrated its willingness to use.”

Dempsey can't speak for Puty, but has decided, overall, Russia is seeking 'to discredit and eventually undermine' NATO.

Long-term implied. They are buying time and covering their six. Wonder what 'harden against subversive activities' means in this context? Cyber, sure, but this whole paranoia, justified or not, leads humans to some pretty dark places. Maybe that's where we are?
