Russia Cuts Off Gas to Ukraine

Russian gas firm Gazprom has confirmed it has halted gas supplies to Ukraine after a breakdown on pricing talks.

It comes a day after Ukraine's state energy firm Naftogaz announced it was suspending gas purchases from Russia.

That announcement came after EU-brokered talks aimed at keeping supplies running for three to six months broke down without agreement.

Gazprom said it halted the supply because Ukraine did not make an "advance payment" for July's delivery.

The disputed recognition of the Baltics, the Italian hit piece on the EU, and now the Russian's cut off gas to Ukraine. An ecomonic war with hybrid elements has broken out in East Europe.

Could this be the initial offensive by Russia to decapitate NATO? One thing is now fact, the stakes in Ukraine just got a lot higher. A fuel embargo will bring military ops to a halt and cause civil unrest in Ukraine. All will benefit Russia at Ukraine's expense.Why?

Russian's still occupying the south and daily cease fire violations are on the rise. All point to an interesting September- Octbober time frame as the last moderate weather comes to an end. Ask yourself, why hasn't the West stepped in to pay this chump change to keep Ukraine afloat? And why did Kiev unilaterally suspend payment to Russia?

Are they now officially broke, or just defiant?

At least they made it through the Winter. The Ukraine people have it hard right now, and it's hard to believe Putin could be doing all this without any concious whatsoever.

I hope the NATO puts more sanctions on Russia for this. But at least the winter is gone... for now! Would this be considered a act of war?

Russia is not obligated to sell anything to anyone, just as Latvia is not obligated to sell potatoes to Germany.

A Little History

Ukraine will make two payments this year to clear most of its gas debt: a $1.45bn tranche "without delay", then a $1.65bn tranche.

This debt settlement will be based on the price of $268.5 per 1,000 cubic metres (cu m).

The EU agreed to act as guarantor for those payments.

Next year the rest of the debt is to be paid off - that quantity of debt and the gas price are to be determined by an independent court.

When the dispute erupted, Russia and Ukraine both took their cases to the international arbitration court at the Stockholm Chamber of Commerce. A final decision is only expected next summer.

Russia agreed to resume gas deliveries to Ukraine, for which Ukraine will pay monthly in advance.

First, remember I am quoting last year here to give a little history, just warning so it will not be confusing

It appears the third party mentioned in the original Is Stocholm Chamber of Commerce. I'm wondering that since this article says the EU guaranteed the payments last time and everything was kept going, does this mean the EU didn't this time?

Or worse, did Russia decline payment in Euros out of his 'concern' about Greece, and demand payment in rubles? This is the kind of stuff that can happen to the US if people stop accepting our dollars.

The natural gas issue was basically was used to start this whole mess, along with some help and a few other reasons. Remember that the West got involved after the ousted pro-Russian elected government inked one of these big deals with Gazprom.

I will have to find the source, but it was a big factor. The EU says that 23% of it gas comes through Ukraine. So far, this default will still not affect that gas, but it could get more of a bargaining point as winter comes, IMO

Too much, too late is what I'd say. If they wanted to cause more damage, they should've done it in the winter. Sure it'll be a problem, but Ukraine has at least four months to get their [censored] together.
