Russian bombers probe US west coat, coming to within 200 miles as of July 4. Radio communications as of July 6 indicate probes continue and have come as close as 50 miles.

Neither official would reveal just how close the bombers came to U.S. shores.

Keyword "would", which suggests that the officials were asked and knew the answer, but declined to answer.

The report I read said they came closer to our claimed 12 mile limit...like 13 miles or so off the coastline. I'm sure though, with the military making up the official story as it goes, there is some confusion among media outlets...that particular report didn't say how close they got, which seems would be easy enough to tell...suggesting they (military) didn't want us to know how close the russians got to the coast, likely because it was too close for comfort. Seems fighter planes would also be able to tell if the plane was armed, assuming the bombs attach to the bottom of the plane and aren't hidden in a bay, which i'm not sure of...but attempts in the past specifically told us the bombers were not armed...which means they can tell. Either the media isn't telling us the full truth, or the military isn't telling them...or both.

This is getting real, and even our own media isn't being given the details...or at least being told not to report them. Putin basically poked Obama in the eye with this one, considering he was giving a 4th congrats to Obama on the phone at the exact same time Russian bombers were near our coastline. Putin made a fool of our president, so I expect a move to counter. Seems like at this point, this is becoming a contest of ego as much as it is just flexing.

With this administration hiding actual numbers, and not telling us just how serious the conflict is, americans will not be prepared if the big event ever occures, as a friend of mine put it, we will in fact be completely blindsided. Our youth in particular, who never experienced the cold war, will be more vulnerable to an attack...this just happens to be one of the largest groups of democratic voters in the US. Once again, politicians trade our lives for political support.

I think that most of agree though, that Putin is testing our defenses. Now, why would he be doing this? Something tells me that it's grown beyond just being macho. Why test ones defenses, unless there was a plan to challenge those defenses later on down the line.

I see this as less a strategic effort to legitimately test defenses and more a political move in terms of the provocation. That being said I too think Putin is up to something and the situation remains fluid.

Russia doesn't have the ability to keep this optempo up long-term. Look at all these 'accidents.' Some may be more than we know, but he knows he must rush modernization, which is even more dangerous.

Sooner rather than later, as JCS Dempsey points out, it's either put up or shut down. I expect increases until fall, then a decision will be forced.

The military officials aren't commenting in the exact distance eh? Seems like they claim too darn close for comfort. Usually they will say: "they came about 100 miles" . I think they intruded our AIRSPACE. That's just me though.

Wouldn't surprise me a bit. Not like the days of Reagan, where he wasn't afraid to tell us a bomb could drop on us at any time so we can prepare. Now, these guys prefer we be blindsided in such an attack.
