Seems Like Russia's Put it's S-400's on High Alert!

This is the sort of thing that confuses the hell out of me, uninitiated with military matters.

I clicked on the website link and ran it through Google Translate. There's no actual date when the video was taken. The text doesn't explicitly refer to this as happening right now. It could be part of the 'massive drills' that were taking place up to yesterday. Or it could not.
C-400 put on combat duty

The first regiment of the Northern Fleet Air Defense, equipped with the latest S-400 "Triumph", who took on combat duty in the Murmansk region. Currently in conjunction defense of the Northern Fleet combat duty carry anti-aircraft missile regiments equipped with the S-300 and S-400. They cover from enemy attack from the air the regional industrial and energy facilities, points-based forces and troops of the fleet and transport communications. The newest system S-400 "Triumph" can lead simultaneous firing of up to 36 targets with guided missiles on them 72 at a distance of 400 km. Video Ruptly.

Does anyone have any confirmation from more than one source that the drills have actually ended? AFP keeps coming up on various websites, but nothing else.

Drills have in fact ended.

Well, the gazeta story says their video is from Ruptly (even though they've put their own watermark on their Twitter still), and the Ruptly Twitter feed posted video of these S-400s on alert as part of the drill yesterday. Which means the video is possibly from Friday.

Communication isn't as instant as people like us to believe. There are plenty of 'news' websites that exist only from pilfering other sources and claiming it as their own 'news'. Not saying this gazeta.ru is one, but I've seen plenty of other sites where out of date information is listed as 'breaking'.

The whole hubbub about the S-XXX series of AA has sort of baffled me. I get their importance and role, however, in a war we're not going to be sending in waves of wedge formations of aircraft into range of these things.

Also, how effective are F-18G "Growler" aircraft against these? Would we be able to disable them, or enough of them. The S-400 (and coming S-500) have seemed to me to be a super advanced version of a Vietnam era defense strategy. It's not like we'd be having bombing runs like WWII. It seems to me we'd have specific targets and a delivery package armed with 2-3 F-18Gs to fly the planed strike path, assuming we used manned aircraft at all, initially.

A bit OT, I find it interesting both sides are putting out new tech stories in the press. Their new tank thing and our new super stealth bomber thing.

S-400 is mostly anti air vehicle, and they might be just on alert, does not mean anything serious if you ask me.

Um....

*looks through papers*

Ah here we are...

I'm pretty sure that even if something is anti-air... that doesn't mean it's not serious. The S-400's in all honesty could be used to take out bombers if it came to that. Mobilizing them seems to be a defensive action on their part. Yet that kind of makes it seems like Russia believes it's going to be the one being attacked...

I think Russia wants it's citizens to believe they are going to be attacked. There has been a lot of unrest in Russia with the recession from their oil boom bottoming out and the fall in their currency. Voices have been stirring against the putin administration, protests, people are starting to organize into groups. Making the people unite against a common enemy is a simple underhanded tactic.

Well if people want war im sure Putin will give it to them, but im not sure they really want it.

Yeah, Russia truely wants war http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b0eOf363SOw
Btw I am from Russia and there is no mobilisation or panic or massive crisis something like that. Well products have become a little more expensive, our money has become cheaper, but nothing so dramatic. People don't want war in Ukraine and want it to end as soon as possible, but our goverment need Ukraine to stay under Russia jurisdiction to make stay out of NATO, thats why they help rebels and play muscles.

P.s. Sorry for my bad english, I haven`t practise it from school

That is true for almost every war. (There are notable exceptions...)

My def-con level on my computer still says three and I am glad they are on high alert and I'm glad for Nuclear war.
Obama and Putin and Kim jun IL is stupid You can not win a nuclear war.-Threads(1982)

Oh, I dunno if one is un-winnable. I'll be fine, and I am in the last twenty of my allotment, so, bring it! :D But seriously.
No matter how powerful, no matter the cost, you can never give in to any bully, tyrant, despot or dictator. Once you do, it's over. It sounds trite, but it is better to die on your feet, than live on your knees. This also applies to what one's own state is doing, probably even more so, as you may have some influence over one's own state, but none at all over a Kim or Vlad...or an obama, or a mullah. You must never forget that freedom must be cherished, and guarded carefully, and more often than not, the threat comes from one's own, domestic leadership caste, whether through malfeasance or negligence or cupidity. Sometimes this requires you must fight an aggressor. Or your own state. It may even be that the only recourse you have left is the fifth freedom. When the government violates the rights of the people, and the people have no lawful redress, insurrection becomes the last redoubt of the people. This is the most sacred of rights and the most indispensable of duties. I note this because I find the world's political and fiscal leadership caste sorely wanting, in fact, most all are behaving in a manner indictable as a crime against the species. Perhaps it is time for all of humanity to re-assess our collective relationship with our ruling elites, and exercise the fifth freedom.

S-400 is strictly an AAV (Anti Air Vehicle), Theirs no other use for them unless you want to use the trucks as cannon fodder when you are on a retreat i suppose.
