"'We should not kid ourselves here… A conflict on the peninsula would be unlike anything we have seen in decades. North Korea is not a Syria. It’s not an Iraq. The consequences could be extremely high,' Magsamen, former Principal Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense for Asian and Pacific Security Affairs, told assembled senators ... 'I would say unlimited war on the Korean peninsula would be unlike anything we’ve ever seen'"

So what now do things on the peninsula cool down from here on out?

We may be heading in the opposite direction. The United States may want to act before South Korea elects someone who is softer on North Korea than the current president is.

Actually, 20 % of North-Koreans were killed in US bombing raids. I wouldn't call that putting it off.

I wouldn't say we did nothing. We paid them a ton of bribe money to slow their progress and have covertly hampered it through other means as well. I personally would draw the line at an ICBM capable of hitting the United States mainland. There is no reason they need this for "defensive" measures. If the US were to ever invade them in the hopes of regime change, China and Russia would provide the ICBM capabilities in those cases.

I'm old enough to understand bill Clinton and policy of containment gave money for food all that. Bush did nothing he puts DPRK on axis of evil list but decided to go after Iraq over weapons of mass destruction.I knew Iraq has no weapons! ! U.n monitors couldn't find any and still we went to war! Bush I think had it out for Saddam since day 1 personally.MEANWHILE. DPRK would flaunt missle tests, nuke tests and fwiw they have weapons of mass destruction .

Former President G.W. Bush had to finish what his father started to save face IMO.

The only chance that this could all end peacefully is for both sides to understand and acknowledge each others concerns without bias. Then sit down and find a diplomatic solution that works for both sides, both sides will need to compromise. If one side refuses to negotiate, then this situation leaves only one last option (war). If war begins, it can only end with diplomacy, I think it would be wise to find that diplomatic solution now. There would be no winner in a war against North Korea, It would only be a matter of who would loose the most and least.

Time for talk according to pence and tillerson on DPRK are over ... Talk over what? .I see this as strategic , China is our no.1 trade partner and Japan is no.3 and ROK is up there. I think what's behind the u.s going to dismantle the mules has to do with some kind of info trump got. When trump took office he said president obama told him his greatest national security threat is gonna be DPRK
.....wait

Of course, the rational & reasonable solution to something above their current [Barely Functional] rocket technology would be more advanced defenses. But we all know this isn't about defense.
