The operator of South Korea's nuclear power plants said Saturday one of its reactors has resumed operation nearly two months after being suspended over a problem in the coolant pump.

The 1,000-megawatt "Hanul-5" reactor began operating around 11:07 p.m. on Friday after winning approval from the country's Nuclear Safety and Security Commission, according to Korea Hydro and Nuclear Power.

The reactor began its commercial operations in 2004 in Uljin, some 330 kilometers southeast of Seoul.

South Korea has 24 nuclear reactors, generating about 21 percent of the country's total power supply.

President Moon Jae-in vowed in June to scrap all existing plans to build new nuclear power plants and not to extend the operation of any aged reactors nearing the end of their initial life cycles.
