Nothing to worry about. You can literally walk on the fresh Lava field's in Hawaii right after it hardens. The smoke is just stinky sulfur. I wouldn't go breathe in the real thick crap by the sea a hundred yards away but that's only where you can't walk without a death wish anyway.

The light fog like smoke won't harm you or the park rangers wouldn't be out there themselves. Hawaii national park on the main island is definitely a bucket list sight to see. Nothing like walking over hard lava rock to see molten lava running in the big cracks below as it sends heat up your shorts.

Just make sure you only go see the volcano and water falls for a day trip and then fly to the nicer island for the rest of your vacation because there isn't anything else to do on the main island and the beaches or horrible.
