Taiwan’s cabinet approved its proposed 2027 central government budget, including NT$1.1225 trillion in defense spending, an increase of approximately 18%.

Defense spending would exceed NT$1 trillion for the first time and surpass 3% of GDP, with funding planned for missiles, drones and broader force modernization.

Taiwan’s Coast Guard intercepted and shadowed the Chinese research vessel Tongji after it approached about 24.9 nautical miles northwest of Penghu before moving south toward waters west southwest of Liuqiu.

Authorities said this was Tongji’s third appearance around Taiwan since May. No survey equipment was observed deployed during the latest encounter.

Russia’s Pacific Fleet conducted live missile firings near the disputed Southern Kurils/Northern Territories, including Bastion coastal missile units on Etorofu, the cruiser Varyag and the nuclear powered submarine Omsk.

The exercise follows President Putin’s recent visit to Etorofu and renewed diplomatic tensions with Japan over the islands.

Japan and the United Kingdom reaffirmed that Euro Atlantic and Indo Pacific security are inseparable during talks between Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi and UK Prime Minister Andy Burnham.

Both sides agreed to deepen security cooperation and continue progress on the Global Combat Air Programme.

HMAS Hobart has completed the major yard phase of Australia’s Destroyer Capability Enhancement program at Osborne Naval Shipyard.

The Hobart class upgrade moves the destroyers toward the Aegis Baseline 9 configuration, significantly improving their integrated air and missile defense capability.

The force will provide technical advice, operational support & surge capacity across cyber operations, AI, network engineering, cloud security, digital forensics, incident response, threat intelligence & cyber strategy.

A U.S. Navy P8A Poseidon transited the Taiwan Strait through international airspace on Aug. 21st. U.S. 7th Fleet said the transit demonstrated Washington’s commitment to a free and open Indo-Pacific. Chinese forces tracked and monitored the aircraft during the transit.
