A new classified strategy shifts focus toward low‑yield tactical nukes designed for regional fights with China or Rusia think Taiwan or the Baltics. Instead of the old all‑or‑nothing choice, the goal is to give the president more rungs on the escalation ladder.

The logic: If Moscow or Beijing ever used a “limited” nuclear strike, the U.S. could respond in kind without triggering Armageddon.

And right on cue the F‑35A has completed a milestone test with the upgraded B61‑12 nuclear bomb, the Pentagon’s precision low‑yield option.

What this means

Shift from strategic megaton weapons → to low‑yield regional deterrence designed to make limited nuclear use less attractive for adversaries gives the president more flexible response optionsF‑35A + B61‑12 = Americas new tactical nuclear tool kit.

Critics warn making nukes “more usable” also makes them more likely to be used

A nuclear strategy that tries to be “flexible” is still… nuclear.

AFAIK:
The B61-12 was introduced in 2023. It is a Dial a Yield Full fuzed (multiple attack profiles) weapon. It is considered a Strategic and Tactical weapon.

In truth the -12 is a stretch to think of it as strategic as the peak yield is reported only as high as 50 kt (for example the -11 is 400 kt) The -12 is fully in service, including the 100 “lend lease” to Nato partners. Britain owns their owns -12’s as well.

These weapons are scary as the lowest yield around .3 (?) allows these to be used in europe without dire consequences (environmental) as compared to it 340-400kts in its previous and legacy variants.
