The Turkey-NATO Deal On Sweden Is A Disaster

What NATO officials bill as a diplomatic masterstroke is actually a disaster in the making.

Put aside Turkey’s humiliation of Sweden and the erosion, at Erdogan’s behest, of free speech and democracy in that country. And put aside the hypocrisy of treating Kurds in Sweden as terrorists when Islamic State sympathizers in Turkey not only roam free but also populate Erdogan’s administration and Turkey’s intelligence service.

Rather, the problem appears to be a new quid pro quo.

Not only does Turkey now expect the lifting of most defense-related sanctions, but a Turkish official also said that Turkey now expects Europe to fast track its long moribund European Union accession process.

The reality is that Stoltenberg’s deal kicks the can down the road but does nothing to dissuade Turkey from repeating its behavior on future NATO missions. If Erdogan walks away from his high-stakes poker with new concessions and chits to show his public, Stoltenberg guarantees that every future important NATO decision will be an opportunity for Turkish extortion.

The tragedy is greater, though. Ukraine is not the only European country that today faces foreign occupation. For almost half a century, Turkey has occupied one-third of Cyprus, a country that, for nearly three decades, has been a European Union member in good standing. Stoltenberg and Sullivan essentially appear now willing to trade a vibrant democracy for an action that is more symbolic than essential.

Cyprus should not be a victim for European and American officials’ belief that statesmanship requires sacrifice. It increasingly is a key American security partner in the Eastern Mediterranean and its importance only grows. One Cyprus today is probably worth five Swedens, regardless of the still small size of the island nation’s army.

NATO leaders may back-slap each other in Vilnius, but they will soon rue the day. Giving Turkey any path to European Union membership absent an end to occupation and a change in political culture sets both a precedent of appeasement and an empowerment of a fundamentally anti-European regime for which Europe, NATO, and the United States will pay a far higher price than they imagine.

A different perspective on the Nato, Turkey deal.

Pretty bad I guess because it looks like they caved.

Have they and to what? Whats actually been agreed? Theyve certainly not been allowed in the EU and given their inflation hasnt hit the EU inflationary target since the early 1960s, and were not talking just missing here (70% this year), its just not happening any time soon.

Do you really think Sweden will change its views on who it considers terrorists at the behest of Erdogan allowing them in to NATO?

It seems like at best, Turkey will get some cheap weapons (win for america), and will be asking for economic support, which theyll probably get due to concessions they made. So the west print more money to give them, making their inflation worse than the wests keeping them in their position.

Turkeys policies and domestic transparency has changed so much to the negative from when they joined NATO.

So I say if Sweden’s position on certain issues quietly reverts back after admission.
Oh well?

As far as I know the only thing that was agreed was that Sweden was going to vouch for Turkey's ascession into the EU, but since not all countries in the EU are especially friendly against Turkey, this could still not make any difference for Turkey's EU aspirations whatsoever.

McConnell drops opposition to sale of F-16s to Turkey after NATO breakthrough

Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-KY) is no longer opposed to the sale of F-16s to Turkey, according to a spokesman, after Ankara dropped its blockade on Sweden joining NATO.

McConnell previously told Punchbowl News he supported a hold on the sale by Sen. Bob Menendez (D-NJ), who as chairman of the Foreign Relations Committee can unilaterally block major sales.

Menendez has yet to release his hold, telling reporters Monday that he needs assurances from the Biden administration that neighboring Greece would have a "qualitative edge" militarily in the region, but the opposition from McConnell was solely based on Turkey's refusal to admit Sweden into NATO, which requires a unanimous vote for new countries to join.

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan was one of two holdouts on its bid but agreed to relent after Sweden tightened its counterterrorism laws and committed to helping reduce trade barriers between Turkey and the European Union.

The addition of Sweden would complete NATO's long-term goal of encircling the Baltic coastline. But equally as important to Western leaders, the move, which follows Finland's accession in April, signifies a rebuke of Russia over its invasion of Ukraine.

The $20 billion sale, which the White House said on Tuesday it will move forward with, would include 40 new F-16s. The administration plans to provide Greece, which has endured Turkish incursions into its airspace, with the delivery of F-35s.

Now I'm on the fence about this. Before the Ukraine war yes Turkey was cozying on up with Russia.

But a lot of news has come out recently about Turkey siding with NATO & Ukraine rather than taking a Russia appeasement rout.

I.e Turkey building drone facilities inside Ukraine, sending weapons to Ukraine, Turkey challenging Russian Black Sea fleet to export grain, and much more.

So I'm considering Turkey is now back into the fold of the west given their action against Russia since the war began.

So I'm not really seeing this whole deal as bad. We should reward Turkey for distancing itself with Russia, challenging Russia, and helping Ukraine.

I view with with much skepticism.
Erdogan looks out for Erdogan, always has, always will.

I'm not saying trust Turkey. But maybe give them a little rope since they have come back into the western fold so to speak over the Ukraine war. They really have been standing up to Russia.

So give them somthing for it. 💁‍♂️ If we continue to punish them than it gives them no reason to continue to come back into the Western fold again and away from Russia.
