I was once told by a student that her father had told her she didn't need to know how to calculate how much change she'd get back when buying something because "that wasn't her job." I had a different student tell me he didn't need to learn about another country because it "wasn't his culture." I can't count how many refused to read the captions under pictures in books to find out what they actually were. So, I have ZERO hope the generation now reaching voting age.
