A TSUNAMI WATCH IS NOW IN EFFECT WHICH INCLUDES THE
COASTAL AREAS OF CALIFORNIA, OREGON, WASHINGTON, BRITISH
COLUMBIA AND ALASKA FROM THE CAL./MEXICO BORDER TO CHIGNIK
BAY ALASKA

At 425 PM Pacific Daylight Time on July 29 an earthquake with
preliminary magnitude 8.7 occurred 80 miles southeast of
Petropavlovsk Kamchatka.

For context: earthquakes of this magnitude are rare, and occur approximately once per 10 years. Fortunately, most hit uninhabited areas and therefore cause little direct damage (although they may trigger destructive tsunamis).

The following is a chart of all M8.0+ eartquakes which have occurred on Earth since 1900. The apparent 3D volumes of the bubbles are proportional to their respective fatalities.
