Soils of war: The toxic legacy for Ukraine's breadbasket

Russia Presses Attempt to Encircle Eastern Ukraine’s Bakhmut:

KYIV, Ukraine—Russian forces pressed their offensive around Bakhmut in an effort to surround the eastern Ukrainian city that for months has been the site of the bloodiest fighting in Russia’s slow-moving invasion.

Russian troops hadn’t achieved any new gains in the Bakhmut area the past day, according to the general staff of Ukraine’s armed forces. But heavy shelling and constant infantry assaults, especially by the Wagner mercenary group, are putting the city’s defenders under growing pressure.

Moldova and Romania Vow to Boost Ties Amid War in Ukraine:

BUCHAREST (Reuters) - Moldova and Romania pledged on Wednesday to boost economic ties following Russia's invasion of neighbouring Ukraine, and Bucharest reiterated support for Chisinau's bid to join the European Union.
On his first trip abroad since taking office last month, Moldovan Prime Minister Dorin Recean held talks with Romanian President Klaus Iohannis and Prime Minister Nicolae Cuica.
Moldova has been hit hard by the economic fallout of the war in Ukraine, which borders both Moldova and Romania, and tensions with Russia have risen over the war in Ukraine and the tiny former Soviet republic's EU accession bid.
"Business on both banks of the Prut speaks the same language," Recean told a joint news conference with Cuica, referring to a river on the border between Romania and Moldova, and the countries' mutual use of Romanian.

Forces may pull out of key city of Bakhmut:

KYIV, Ukraine -- The Ukrainian military might pull troops back from the key stronghold of Bakhmut, an adviser to Ukraine's president said Wednesday in remarks that suggested Russia could capture the city that has become a symbol of Ukrainian resistance.

Kremlin forces have waged a bloody, monthslong offensive to take Bakhmut, a city of salt and gypsum mines in eastern Ukraine that has become a ghost town.

“Our military is obviously going to weigh all of the options. So far, they’ve held the city, but if need be, they will strategically pull back," Alexander Rodnyansky, an economic adviser to Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, told CNN. “We’re not going to sacrifice all of our people just for nothing.”

Russia tries to close ring on Bakhmut as Ukrainians mount 'furious resistance':

Russian forces carried out relentless attacks on Bakhmut on Wednesday, trying to encircle and storm the small eastern Ukrainian city and claim their first major prize for more than half a year after some of the bloodiest fighting of the war.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky accused Moscow of throwing waves of men into battle in Bakhmut with no regard for their lives, and said the fighting was "most difficult" but the city's defense essential.

Can anyone explain whether or not these aircraft are just training, or something else? I haven't seen these in this close proximity to the black sea in a while. The Chinook landed however the others have been hovering.
