"The U.S. is prepared to launch a preemptive strike with conventional weapons against North Korea should officials become convinced that North Korea is about to follow through with a nuclear weapons test ... The intelligence officials told NBC News that the U.S. has positioned two destroyers capable of shooting Tomahawk cruise missiles in the region, one just 300 miles from the North Korean nuclear test site. American heavy bombers are also positioned in Guam to attack North Korea ... Pentagon announced that the USS Carl Vinson aircraft carrier strike group was being diverted to the area ... The U.S. strike could include missiles and bombs, cyber and special operations on the ground ... The danger of such an attack by the U.S. is that it could provoke the volatile and unpredictable North Korean regime to launch its own blistering attack on its southern neighbor ... On Wednesday, North Korea said it would 'hit the U.S. first' with a nuclear weapon should there be any signs of U.S. strikes ... On Thursday, North Korea warned of a 'merciless retaliatory strike' should the U.S. take any action ... 'By relentlessly bringing in a number of strategic nuclear assets to the Korean peninsula, the U.S. is gravely threatening the peace and safety and driving the situation to the brink of a nuclear war,' said North Korea's statement ... 'Two things are coming together this weekend,' said retired Adm. James Stavridis ... 'One is the distinct possibility of a sixth North Korean nuclear weapons detonation and the other is an American carrier strike group, a great deal of firepower headed right at the Korean Peninsula' ... The U.S. is aware that simply preparing an attack ... increases the danger of provoking a large conflict ... 'It's high stakes,' a senior intelligence official directly involved in the planning told NBC News ... 'Its a feat that we've never achieved before but there is a new sense of resolve here,' the official said ... The threat of a preemptive strike comes on the same day the U.S. announced the use of its MOAB ... Moscow has weighed in as well: 'We are gravely concerned about Washington's plans regarding North Korea, considering hints about the unilateral use of a military scenario' the Putin government said ... Implementation of the preemptive U.S. plans, according to multiple US officials, depends centrally on consent of the South Korean government. The sources stress that Seoul has got to be persuaded that action is worth the risk, as there is universal concern that any military move might provoke a North Korean attack, even a conventional attack across the DMZ ... the Chinese made an important gesture at the UN Thursday: A surprising abstention on a Security Council resolution condemning a Syrian chemical weapons attack. China didn't stand with the Russians on Syria, as it has in the past. The president also made clear that if the Chinese were unable to defuse the situation, the U.S. would go to alone. On Thursday, he tweeted: 'I have great confidence that China will properly deal with North Korea. If they are unable to do so, the U.S., and its allies will!'"

As a side note, the fact that PRC didn't veto at the UN is also very interesting, as PRC had recently suggested that they should stand together at the UN, voting in step with one another. This was part of Xi's proposal for a "fairer world order," as presented to Putin.

Translated to bureaucrat-Norwegian and bureaucrat-German, that means: "Bad idea, it will probably backfire, you idiot."

Same in American-English?

So if this is to happen, what are the chances Russia will become involved?
I understand the threat of China, but I'm not concerned with them currently.

Or a more conservative, "it's very risky," especially when clarified with "'Its a feat that we've never achieved before." Of course, these points are axioms rather than opinions. To provoke a war with DPRK would be to risk a war which few alive today have seen. The nearest comparison would be WWII. We're not talking about a small military positioned on flat and open desert terrain. We're talking about one of the world's largest militaries, a nuclear power, in terrain which consists of mountains, hills and forests. We're talking a country which has the potential to overrun USFK, rapidly create destruction not seen since the Great Wars, which may conquer ROK, where millions may day, where CONUS may suffer attack, where WWIII may result.

A "bad idea" indeed, but Trump appears to be a gambling man. When I read that quote though, I found myself wondering whether or not that individual was advising against the attack, or advocated the attack in excitement.

Little to none, I think. North Korea is China's problem.
Agreed. Russia may take advantage of the situation elsewhere in the world, perhaps hence America's positioning of assets in Europe and the Middle East, but PRC shouldn't be willing to permit DPRK to fall, DPRK shouldn't need more than what PRC could offer in assistance, Russia can probably best help by being a distraction elsewhere, and depending on the strategy and audacity of DPRK, it's possible DPRK will require no assistance what-so-ever. Still, Russia could assist. Combined PRC and RF assistance to DPRK could even pressure America into rapid deescalation, especially if this comes aggressively and as a surprise. Wouldn't it be surprising if the Chinese and Russian navy's attack that "armada," a PLAN submarine sinks CVN-70, PLAAF and VKS reinforce achieve air superiority over DPRK and provide support to DPRK soldiers as they advance on ROK. USA would be unlikely to prevail. It would be forced to withdraw to prevent the conflict from expanding beyond the area, and America won't be so audacious again.

Could go a lot of ways, but unless Russia and China are supremely audacious, it would be unlikely that Russia will provide assistance to DPRK. Assuming America is itself audacious enough to attack DPRK at all.

Why would Russia ever get involved. That just becomes another geopolitical mess on their table.

A. To restrain the United States. They don't like our regime change actions and interference in foreign countries.
B. To assert control in their east. They do border North Korea after all.
C. Keep the North Korean buffer alive. The North as a buffer works to protect Russia as well.
D. To raise the cost of U.S. action. Now the President has to wonder if this spirals what side China AND Russia will be on. That makes the cost of action higher, even "limited" strikes.

Now if the U.S. strikes anyway then Russia will be in a good position with having more forces in the area to respond to refugees or support the North Korean government against America. If we DON'T strike then this can be played as the bear stopping the eagle with the threat of action in the theater.

Either way Putin wins really.

Russia shares a border with North Korea. They have a valid vital national security interest in what happens there.

A russian invasion of Mexico would probably involve the US.

China is really the parallel to the US in this situation.

Imagine if China placed Ballistic Missiles in Mexico... damn the fire storm Trump would have.

A think a more realistic possibility would be in 20-30 years, involving Canada allowing the currently forming EU military to install large military bases near the border. Call me crazy, but with another global/continental super power growing, the business of military and resources will eventually compete with each other globally. Canada seems to admire the EU system, and assuming the U.S. doesn't give away our own sovereignty to a North American alliance (who knows how long we can resist that) with Mexico and Canada, they will have little control.

I really don't see the EU being good for America in the long run.
