I agree that’s why I don’t see the scenario as very likely cause there’s no good outcome for either side.

Just note that not all of our adversaries believe in MAD. One might be able to argue that only the west believes in MAD. In fact, Chairman Mao didn't (source), and perhaps thought nuclear war was beneficial for socialism (source).

Fair point I would hope that they have moved past that thought process though now that they’ve had 60 years to rethink that. I’m not as familiar with Chinese nuclear doctrine as I am the United States and Russias but I would assume at this point that they should be aware that China could not survive nuclear war as their population is already threatened with decline.

MAD - Nuclear umbrella neither gives me peace of mind. Imagine hypothetical should Australia be nuked by Russia or China we are supposed to feel good about America making itself a target of the same fate we receive solely over flexing power. Now millions and three countries are nuked over one. I'll die slowly knowing our allies are suffering the same as us because they felt the need to strike the enemy in retaliation of- with nukes non of us even the enemy could defend itself from. Truly MAD. Nuclear umbrella only useful as deterrence. Once first is launched it all means shit from then on. Especially with that attitude. Umbrella-MAD funny thing is the west in my opinion will more than likely be the first to use them.

Legitimately what are see supposed to do in your opinion then? Let’s say in your scenario China nukes Australia and we just say welp there goes Australia, what kind of example does that set? Yes nuclear weapons are crazy the entire concept of nuclear weapons is quite possibly the stupidest thing that humans have ever invented, but unfortunately it’s the world we live in. I wish more than anything humans will one day come to the table and get rid of them but I never see that happening. So unfortunately the fate of the planet rests on mad it doesn’t give me much peace of mind but it is what it is.

Your 2 questions were answered when the effects of 2 atomic bombs were used on the Japanese. As humans we missed the correct answers. And even with time past and opportunities and capabilities and growth, what we call advancement, it is plain to see we still don't get it. Blind leading the blind. Human nature is our own failure to truly recognise our mistakes. The answer obviously doesn't come from-with catastrophe. The possibility we are actually just another passing life form like many before us extinct now for different reasons comes to mind. Even our own brains abilities are not enough not save us. To self obsessed with feeling the need for immortal life as Individuals fearing nature and the natural cycle of every life form that ever existed. Anyway each to their own. Sad but true. I think as humans we simply fear natural process. Although we are surrounded by it not only by our own planet but everything we learn about the universe aswell. Creation not only in life forms are born and die or should you prefer exist than don't. From plant,animal, bacteria etc to rocks,stars ,planets and more. The single common denominator is absolutely everything has a time frame of life or existence. Striving to excell past this fact is a huge misconception only we have created for our own selfish insecurity. Whether trying to achieve through science and technology or from religion. Fact is nature is a force we should accept and only than we may excel truly. Ok fine I may have got a bit carried away. Anyway goodluck with my opinion 🙂🤝👍💪✊🤞

If China can control the South Pacific (to a certain extent), then they can exert influence on trade, economics and foreign policies.
