Venezuelan Foreign Minister Jorge Arreas believes that the lack of a diplomatic channel of communication between Caracas and Bogotá means that the Colombian government relies on the war between the two states. He expressed this opinion on Sunday in an interview with the Venezuelan television channel Televen.
"[Between countries] there is no diplomatic practice. When diplomacy traditionally fades away in international relations, what happens? War, they are betting on war in Colombia," said the Venezuelan foreign minister.
During the interview, Arreas noted that in the fall he tried to contact his Colombian counterpart, Carlos Olmes Trujillo, and sent him letters calling for dialogue. “The goal [of the letters] was to create a space for meetings in order to minimally coordinate relations between neighboring states,” he explained.
In early November, the Venezuelan Foreign Minister accused the Colombian government of breaking off diplomatic relations. In mid-October, Colombian President Ivan Duque stated that he would not return his ambassador "to the country with dictatorship."
Venezuela in recent years is experiencing an acute socio-economic crisis, accompanied by the devaluation of the national currency and hyperinflation. According to the parliament, inflation from January to October of this year was about 287,000%, and on an annualized basis, price increases exceeded 833,000%. The IMF predicts that by the end of the year inflation could reach 1,000,000%. The data of the Central Bank of Venezuela on the level of inflation has not been published for several years.
