Volcano eruption on La Palma could cause a Mega-Tsunami

for once, I’m glad I live in the UK…christ
The U.K will get a tsunami. But only a couple meters high. Nothing like the Americas will face. London will be sunk along with any other western/southern coastal U.K town. But again wouldn't be very large and wouldn't go that far inland in U.K.

If this tsunami was rated as a tornado for destruction rating U.K would get a F1-F3. But Americas would get a F5-F8. For easy comparison of strength and I know it doesn't go to F8 just is analogy meaning beyond comparable scale of anything we know.

There will likly be little to no warning for Spain & U.K as wouldn't take long for the landslide tsunami to clip you guys.

In fact reports of a tsunami in EU & Africa will likly be Americas first warning sign besides half the mountain sliding into the ocean.

If after half the island splits there might not be any infrastructure left working on the island to report it so a tsunami in EU/Africa could be our first warning.

It's not the height of the Tsunami in this case that is the most worrying,
but it's potential impressive speed of 650mph will leave no infastructure in the impact area intact.
Nuclear power plants on the coasts are in danger.☢️

I suspect there would be massive earthquake sensors going off everywhere if any part of the volcanos slope collapsed Into the ocean or not.

Still. Have to take into account no one would be able to directly report from the Island after it collapses. May take awhile before confirmation of the event, let alone a confirmation of a tsunami. By that time it may be on or knocking on EU door before a alert goes out.

Vent caving and sinking in big time:

Mountain stability steadily decreasing. That's the last thing we want. Not being alarmist or fear mongering. But if you do enough research you will find that studies showed years ago the mountain was already destabilizing.

Please take this seriously if you are on the east coast of Americas and make a plan than practice with family now.

In particular nuclear power plants on the east coast are of the biggest concerns for me too... well besides millions of people drowning alive is equally horrific.

Though wouldn't Europe get most of the fallout due to the jet stream? Anyone know exactly where fallout would head if its source where the east coast of America?

Not to familiar. Just know fallout patterns in US originating from the west as I live in east.

Volcano violently explodes today, major intensification, sinking slopes, and fissures & cone collapse.

Air travel is now completely haulted on and around the island. Scientists also can't explain why its exploding or creating these sonic like booms a lot though they have theories. These booms and explosions really not good for the stability of the mountain which we really don't want falling into the Atlantic.

There is no good news to report.

I noticed there is a dearth of info on this from usgs. That and I read a article regarding a landslide collapse from this volcano.
It maintains a landslide would be bad locally it would not necessarily be catastrophic for the western Atlantic basin.
They point to 2004 Sumatra earthquake and resulting tsunami. That was a fault rupture a thousand miles long and displaced a order of magnitude larger vol of sea water than would be displaced by any landslide.
The reason being follows. In a landslide the energy and displacement will be distributed out in a radial pattern thus diffusing the volume over the entire Atlantic basin.
There is some inherent logic to this argument but in not a specialist.
visualize it like this dropping a large stone in a swimming pool versus an even larger tree trunk equal to say half the length of the pool.

Ive not had much success in finding decent scientific reporting on this comparison. If someone has a source to a geologic authority addressing this view then please link it.

But what about the scientific evidence of ocean wide tsunamis hitting the Americas coast on a massive scale where entire east coast of both Americas have soil and ocean sediments being hit all at same time & coincidence date pretty similar to the collapse of these islands many thousands of years ago.

The soil and ocean floor sediment historical evidence is to much, I can't deny a landslide of this size, the size of NYC sliding into the Atlantic would cause a ocean wide tsunami. When it happens & the scale is debatable, but the event is not.

There is this from livescience. It list several underwater ground movements and subduction zone uplifts that would cause East coast tsunami.
The canary island volcano is mentioned but according to the author it being a cause has largely been discounted as a source of a major tsunami. Only creating one of several feet.

Again just putting it out there

Let's just hope we never find out. I just got my condo remodeled this year after the hurricane & renovations soon to be on there way on my inland house in central FL. Don't want to take that kind of loss.

This article is from 2012 and I didn't find any other sources. There is no logic reasoning behind it, just a guy that says he doesn't see it as a credible threat. So, is he right and are all others wrong? I doubt that.
The nearby Canary Islands, off the coast of Morocco, also present a possible hazard. One large volcano on the island of La Palma, called Cumbre Vieja, could erupt, collapse and create a large tsunami capable of reaching the East Coast. A 2001 study suggested this series of events could send a 70-foot (21 m) wave crashing into the East Coast. But ten Brink said that study hasn't held up to subsequent review, and that the wave would be unlikely to exceed several feet in height by the time it reached North America. "I don't see it as a credible threat," he said.

Almost all the studies on this mega tsunami where done years ago. But really its impossible to predict exactly how much mass will be injected in the Atlantic or how sever it may be. To many variables.

All we know is that it happens. We can only hope that if the mountain does collapes it isn't the size of Manhattan.

That news is not good. I keep hoping everyday that the intensity will slowdown. But just keeps upping the ante.

The probability just keeps growing. Yet not much media coverage on it. You have to dig for it yourself and sort through all the fearmongering being posted online to find what's really going on.

Even the facts are not that reassuring. So maybe fearmongers may actually have a leg to stand on here for once.

Maybe boy cried wolf problem is happening and people just automatically shrug off anyone claiming anything cataclysmic in nature is nearing. So respected media sources don't report it when something cataclysmic nearing could actually happen in nature is now going unnoticed in the general public.
