So far i've limited my radio activity to just listening to collect news, but I've decided that I want to transmit and play a bigger part in that community. Saturday, i'm going to take the test in hopes to acquire my Technician Class Radio License, and I'll go after my General Class License after that. I feel confident since I've been passing all the practice tests lately, but can't help but feel that bit of nervousness that creeps in during a test that tends to mess people up. The VE tells me that if I pass, i'll be fully licensed and ready to transmit by the time the FCC opens up Monday morning. I'll let you know the result.
Main reason i'm posting this, is to encourage others interested in the field to do the same. The test isn't too difficult once you know the material, and the questions and answers to those questions are available online. They do like a pool of 200 questions, but only 35 are on the actual test and you are allowed to get 9 incorrect answers. So basically, you memorize the answers to all 200 best you can, which isn't really that hard...some are just common sense. The real learning appears to come after you get your license, where you can begin to gain experience.
If anybody is interested, then let me know and I can provide my study material and other information, it's free of charge. The test itself cost no more than $15 to take from your local test provider. If SHTF, then you'll have the experience you need to communicate, without the need for cell towers or the grid. Though I use an SDR setup on my computer to listen to the USAF and other channels at this time, as far as transmitting goes, i'll be starting out with a portable transceiver that I got on amazon for 30 bucks, and use of my local repeaters. I'll purchase a more powerful setup as I gain more experience.
