They do. They have plenty Artillery and Smerch rockets, although it’s never enough against a Russian invasion. Russia will hit them in many places at once. Hopefully they traded their best from the south to ring Kiev.

It means Russia can invade and claim they aren't invading because those areas are "not Ukraine".

I don't see that happening. At least not realistically. Russia recognizes the breakaway regions and what? Ukraine suddenly has an army that can stop Russia? No way. Russia recognizes them and everything is exactly as it was except, as I said above, Russia can now invade with a clean conscious.

If a Russia invasion is just limited to the Donbas, I assume that the chances of this escalating further are lowered?

Oh no. The West will wonder if Russia is going to go further. Plus the sanctions, though we have yet to see what exactly those will be since the US said they would be proportional.
