Nah, it's actually hurting Russia more than anyone. They are gonna be completely dependent upon China now. That puts them in a compromising position. Yes, China is our competitive rival on a world stage. But they are Russia's regional rival...even though they have a good relationship. The fact that China came out and explicitly said yesterday that Russia is not our ally should tell you everything you need to know. Even if they increase trade with China, it simply can't compete with what the West offers. If that were the case, China would have done dropped Europe/US in favor of trade of Russia. They will also increase trade with Iran, North Korea, Syria and few of the rogue states; but lets be serious...that's not going to help much.

As far as France still talking to Russia, I'm kinda baffled. Macron has been embarrassed by Putin twice. Who purposely lied to him twice. Putin's diplomatic reputation is ruined and none of these other states are going to talk to him anymore. After seeing how he done Macron, no one else is willing to risk that embarrassment. Dont forget either that China stood with Russia in favor of the Minsk agreements just a day before Russia pretty much ripped them up in front of the world. That left a sour taste in China's mouth.

The west (other than Macron) will never communicate with putin again, it will take someone else representing the government. But so far it looks like Russia has chose to bleed itself out in Ukraine first.
I think the most effective way to get at Russia is just turn our backs on them and let them 'bleed' in the Ukraine. They will not be up for anymore military adventures anytime soon. Putin has a few more years left in him at best; and maybe this will facilitate his demise; for he has burned any bridges he had left with the west; and he knows it. The people who back him also know it.

Moderator edit: This site does not publicly post the DEFCON alert status of the US military.

1: It's illegal to do so
2: Most claims of "US forces are at DEFCON X" are pure bullshit

If you think you have insider intelligence on the US military's DEFCON level, you may send it to one of the DEFCON staff members by private message, along with the source of your information.

Any posts indicating US military alert status will be deleted, regardless of accuracy or legitimacy of source.

Just speculating- maybe Poland considers use of airstrips as "indirect support" and he was only giving a safe answer. (But I know nothing.)

Previous thread was locked before a moderator could approve my 2nd post. To summarize- it seems the UA Navy did retract their facebook post, so the only remaining source for the claim is a politician:
In turn, another deputy, Oleksiy Honcharenko, stated that "if necessary" the planes handed over to Ukraine "will be able to base themselves at Polish airports from which Ukrainian pilots will carry out combat missions". Also in this case, there is no confirmation from Poland.

Dumb question, but if Ukraine is admitted into the EU, doesn’t that mean Russia is de facto at war with the EU? A.K.A. Really bad news?

Not sure if this is right place to post this, but after 7 days of fighting pretty apropos though.

The European Union is a trading union , they will not go to war with Russia. Also they won’t hook instantly it’s quite a long process from what I’m aware , a process in which you need everyone in the EU to unanimously agree upon

i heard that they accepted Ukraine with a special procedure, and
i saw the effect zelensky had with his speech on EU parlement, they could accept ( not confirmed yet )

The EU accepted Ukraine into the Union. Special session to be held soon. This big no?
Not really IMO, The EU is a trading union which doesn’t have a military, their basically a member of it now with all the support their giving them not much will change it’s just for EU to again look like their doing something when their not

Interesting notes from Boris Johnson's presser this morning. Of particular interest: "A journalist asked Mr Johnson whether there could be a compromise between Russia and Ukraine. He said that the international community must recognise that the outcome is the decision of the Ukrainians. "If there is a way forward that they can envisage, then of course the UK would be supportive." However, Mr Johnson said at the moment this is difficult to foresee. "How can you negotiate with someone whose tanks are rolling towards Kyiv?""

Something to watch because there is no doubt that Russia isn't going to make any sort of deal with all of the sanctions that have been imposed remaining in place. Thus the question I posed yesterday: if Ukraine can find a deal that works for them which involves removal of sanctions (or at least the most significant sanctions), would the West be willing to defer to Ukraine and do that? If they do, this means that the ongoing consequences for Russia are much less significant......and thus that the invasion worked.
