It is a political measure. It does not change US policy. It is only step one of two in the legislative process. The lower house of the US Congress is giving the green light for US intervention if it gets even more dire.
Soooo in that light it might pass, if in no other case it will be used as part of the unofficial rhetoric from the US regarding the state of affairs currently.
I detest Kitzenger but politically it’s brilliant for him. He’s not running to keep his seat so he’s positioning himself as the principled neocon.
So no matter how this plays out short of Armageddon. He’s young, vet, a never trumper and now bravely speaking out to stand up to Russia.
Depending how the resolution is worded it very well could pass as a statement of principle only. Following up on The speaker of the house surprise secret visit to Kiev. It all could be timed to be working to together. If pelosi allow it to go to vote there you go.
Not saying it will but I won’t be surprised if it does because it is still far removed for authorization for war.
It’s policy change rhetoric for domestic and foreign policy goals.
They can pass it and then point back in time and say look we wanted to do more!
And it satisfies their bases calls to do more while not really doing anything that can’t be paused or reversed.

This most importantly and specifically. Its going to be really interesting to see if it passes and by what margin if it does..... then one wonders.... will the War Powers act be invoked in case someone decides to intervene or will it be another police action by executive fiat.....

Well that is another reason I’m my mind to at least start the process.
Something of this consequence damm well better be debated in at least on one of the legislative bodies.
Bring it up roll the debate out as it should be done. Publicly debating all of the pitfalls and parameters of any authorization. It has to have the understanding and support of the political process in the nation.
But again I’m just spit balling here. God forbid we do anything that even remotely follows the spirit of the constitution.
Passing it would also send a pretty clear message to Russia.

Why do I get the sense that all these high profile visits to Kyiv are a message to Russia to not think about regime change again?
It is mostly good press and "propaganda" for the West. Just a show of support. Kinda like a pat on the back. Makes for good pictures and media coverage. Boosts moral too for Ukraine. Also a good * or message to Putin.
Way more about the messaging behind it then any particular actions being taken when they are there.

I heard a story about a Ukrainian child that was tied to their dead mother’s corpse with a mine in between. The mine went off when attempting to separate. This was confirmed by the MoD of Ukraine. I have no words other than this shows this isn’t just about Putin. We are dealing with a bunch of gangsters/criminals masquerading as the Russian army.
