According to this article, Turkey has pulled this before with other countries joining NATO. Basically they are like a kid that wants attention, and need to be placated.

We withheld our new ground breaking F-35 from them for purchasing Russian military hardware. Bet you US willing to sell them now to Turkey to get Finland/Sweeden in NATO.

I've always thought NATO took Turkey and Greece in primarily to avoid a war between these two. But yep, Turkey is super important for NATO, geographically speaking - perhaps as much as Poland, if not moreso. As for Erdogan... the guy is a creep, but can probably be bought off. The pertinent question would be - is NATO willing to pay the ransom? Imo the jury is still out on that one.
