The Chinese Government has stated they are “Investigating” the United States reports that a Chinese High-Altitude Surveillance Balloon violated both Canadian and U.S Airspace yesterday.
They have also called for Calm Heads to Prevail while the Investigation takes place and that Speculation and Theories are not helpful until all the Facts come forward.

Could they be loaded with Nukes or if there is 100s or 1000s could they do anything to disturb signals or guide their own missiles ? ( like an umbrella over a target area ) and what are the rules? could they deploy above an area "the rod from god" ?
Kinetic weapons need to be orbital to gain sufficient velocity, unless they've come up with some kind of new technology, so I don't think that's it. Plus the array under the balloon is almost certainly for communications.

I have to think that the military knows exactly what it is and that if it carried a weapon of any kind they would have destroyed it already. On the other hand, the Chinese "investigating reports" and asking for "calm" is almost certainly bullshit. If it's theirs, they know exactly what it is and why it's there.

I would like to know who broke this story. Was it government or civilian? I think china got caught with their pants down. Possibly us too.

I thought it was a local television station, which appears embarrassing on the surface, but I can't imagine NORAD didn't already know it was there.

"COLD STAR’s plastic balloon is transparent to radar, and its gondola can be made stealthy by eliminating the straight lines and sharp corners that produce strong radar reflections in aircraft design." Cold Star is ours and I'm not sure what the radar track of a stealthy slow moving balloon like what the chinese sent would be.

Well, I know weather radar can pick up flocks of birds. I would hope our national defense radar is better than NOAA's. Plus, if it is a comms array as we suspect, wouldn't we pick up on the transmissions?

I would hope so. (y) I'm sure the chinese know that though. If I were them, I wouldn't have it transmit till it left US airspace. As far as the radar track goes a flock of birds would probably be ignored and not have fighters respond. If this is the case probably someone in NORD is gonna get chewed on and demoted. Of course, this is all speculation.

Couldn't resist.

Is it under power? I don't think a balloon can hover or follow a certain trajectory over our missile fields. Why would they do this? It's so obvious.
For what it worth Balloons can change their course by changes in altitude to more favorable wins or to near zero wind, if it wishes to loiter. The additions of some electrical props with solar panals woud greatly enhance it maneuverability or loiter time in calm winds. Winds are rarely the same from the surface to altitude where they become several hundred miles an hour. If you have a high/low altitude capable balloon, it’s not a big technical issue.

On my personal scale of geopolitical seriousness this ranks around 3/10, just slightly above Lavrov's visit to Uganda, below the Ukrainian cabinet reshuffles and way way below the truly important developments such as GLSDB deliveries, Putin's renewed threats to attack NATO, Russia's noncompliance with START and other trivia which belong on page 5 - at least according to American newsmedia.

I wonder where the thing is now, and on what course. Also....what does a civilian do if they should see the balloon( say over farmland or etc. while they are outside)? Do we go back indoors right away, or take a picture of it and contact local non-emergency officials (local radio/news, town hall etc.)? I seriously would like to know.

If someone shoots at it from their back yard could they trigger an international incident?

Asking... for a friend...

The president told the military to shoot it down. They didn't shoot it down.

Moderator Edit: The above claim is false. POTUS gave no such order and acted in accordance with advice provided to him by his military advisors to NOT shoot it down.

It should have been shot down. This is ridiculous even if it is "civilian Chinese" You know it's gathering intel for their military. I'm sorry what this looks like to me is china testing to see if A. we see it and respond and B. Locate first strike targets. Shoot it down! Absolute absurd we haven't tried to capture it at least.

Why announce it? It's like telling the enemy do what ever you want and we wont respond. Not sure who is even in charge of our military but it's definitely not the president. Ridiculous!
