US sanctions target three in China for laundering North Korean cyber hauls.
The US will send a nuclear submarine to visit South Korea for the first time in four decades as part of a new deterrence arrangement between Washington and Seoul that is bound to draw the ire of North Korea.
The arrangement, set to be formalized by President Biden later Wednesday, is being described by the White House as the most significant of its kind since the Cold War.
Dubbed the “Washington Declaration,” it is designed to “strengthen US deterrence commitments” to South Korea in the face of persistent nuclear threats from their northern enemy, a senior White House official said late Tuesday.
US to dock nuclear subs in South Korea for 1st time in 40 years
Not surprised. It's probably to reassure the South Koreans that the US will protect them with their nuclear weapons, and that they don't need their own weapons programme.![]()

The United States pledged to give South Korea more insight into its nuclear planning over any conflict with North Korea amid anxiety over Pyongyang's growing arsenal of missiles and bombs
#UPDATE China on Thursday warned Washington and Seoul against "provoking confrontation" with North Korea, after President Joe Biden and his South Korean counterpart said Pyongyang would face the "end" of its leadership if it uses its nuclear arsenal.
It is. For fairly obscure technical reasons SLBMs and other long-range ballistic missiles have a minimum range which is believed to be roughly 1/3 of their maximum range (this works out to ~2500 km in our case). The "too long" range of the submarine's missiles mean it may not be able to hit North Korea if it were in South Korean waters, he said.
Does anyone know if this is true?

What I found interesting in this article is this.
"It is questionable whether the North would be afraid of a strategic nuclear submarine equipped with an SLBM with a range of more than 7,400 kilometres (4,600 miles)," Cheong Seong-chang of the Center for North Korea Studies at the Sejong Institute told AFP.

North Korea has been firing off missile after missile this past year — in fact, Kim Jong Un’s regime launched more than 100 since 2022. Nearly every time, propagandists claim they have made significant advancements in their nuclear and weapons program.
