US and Europe to clarify NATO’s future relationship with Russia

NATO labeled Russia as the "most significant and direct threat to Allies’ security," while the Kremlin claims what it calls NATO's eastward expansion is an existential danger.

However, despite the change in tone, NATO still keeps the "Founding Act" with Russia alive. It's a document signed in 1997, six years after the Soviet Union's collapse, stipulating a shared goal to "build a stable, peaceful and undivided Europe."

NATO countries are now in the process of trying to "map out different elements of [the Russia] strategy and advance the debates inside the alliance that takes us to subjects like the future of the NATO-Russia Founding Act," a senior U.S. government official told reporters on Friday.

"It's time to now craft a new strategy in terms of [the allies'] specific positions," the official said.
During the July NATO summit in Washington, the allies agreed to draw up a new NATO-Russia strategy at the next alliance summit, set for The Hague in June 2025.

The U.S. official added: "Right now we have to have an understanding across the alliance ... that the [Founding Act] and the NATO-Russia Council were built for a different era, and I think the allies are prepared to say that was a different era in our relationship with Russia, and therefore something new is merited."

The official said that there's no draft yet of the new strategy, as the focus is on gathering views across the 32 NATO countries. They also said the military implication of this political exercise is expected to be limited. A NATO diplomat said there is worry among some members that a very aggressive new strategy could send a "signal" that could destabilize Russia.

These articles, whilst sometimes informative are completely Wong about the levels of hate mostly between the US and Russia.

These days are not remotely frosty. The current relations between Russia and NATO are like a summer music festival compared to the Cold War. We had, at times, bombers in the air loaded with special weapons holding just out side of Russias air space for years at a time. We had nuclear warhead armed cruise missile stashed all over the world. We had nuclear weapon delivered by field artillery and one of my favorites was the “back pack” nukes and SF teams that would carry them after being inserted by helicopter. No one really believed that this portable nuke would actually run down a hours long timer while you evaded to anywhere but there. “Start, boom” was the belief.

We killed each others intelligence assets and occasionally officers. We directly fought as the UN forces fighter jets squared off against Soviet manned Fighters in Korea and allegedly in Vietnam. We (the USA) were helping kill Russians in Shitastan during The Soviets turn to lose their empire. On top of that the world had over 70,000 nuclear warheads, with the US holding 31,000+ and the Russians had ~40,000. We had a super high percentage constantly aimed at each other. For perspective the US has -3500 today. We lived with the threat of instant no warning Nuclear War for decades. Most people today feel that short of an accident, Nuclear War twixt Russian and NATO is remote (but growing over Natos expansion to Russian borders despite NATO pledge not to do so. ( So yes in this case we are the lying sacks of sh*t )

These days our worse days don’t even make blip on the Cold War experience.

I agree with this assessment completely. I lived through it. (y) Still, how many warhead detonations does it take to throw a country into complete chaos? :cool:

It doesn't even need to be over a city. All one would have to do is use a nuclear bomb anywhere nothing special, even just a open battlefield with essentially no casualties or radiation disperse. Just that alone would send the Western world into chaos.

Just one would:
  • Send the stock markets into free fall, trading would likly be suspended.
  • Make panic buying durring covid look like a walk in the park.
  • Mass suicide.
  • Mass hysteria.
  • Likly piss poor attempts by government to calm people only to make it worse.
  • Misinformation would be unprecedented making any sence of the situation impossible maybe even for the government itself.
  • Looting once stores run dry.
So much more. Just from one being used. Ironic thing is we would do more self harm to ourselves than that one nuke ever could.

Totally agree, think just one would send everyone on a panic frenzy, the government would have to enact some serious marshal law to get things under control if that was even possible.

Hahaha. Government mismanagement brought them to this situation. Now gov would have to do even more extreme and damaging action to remedy their earlier F__k up🤣🤣🤣🤣
